রাফি প্রাণী খুব ভালোবাসত। বিড়াল দেখলে দৌড়ে যেত, শালিক দেখলে হাততালি দিত, আর কুকুরছানা দেখলে তো কথাই নেই! কিন্তু রাফি ভাবত, ভালোবাসা মানেই শুধু জড়িয়ে ধরা আর আদর করা।
Rafi loved animals. He ran after cats, clapped at mynas, and when he saw a puppy, he could hardly keep still! But Rafi thought that loving animals simply meant hugging and petting them.
এক রোদেলা বিকেলে পাশের বাড়ির বাদামি-সাদা কুকুরছানাটি লেজ নাড়তে নাড়তে উঠোনে এল। “ওমা, কী মিষ্টি!” বলে রাফি ধুপধাপ করে ছুটে গেল, দুই হাত বাড়িয়ে ছানাটিকে জড়িয়ে ধরতে চাইল। কুকুরছানাটি থমকে দাঁড়াল, তারপর পিছিয়ে গেল। কান দুটো নামিয়ে সে গুটিসুটি হয়ে বসে পড়ল, চোখে ভয়।
One sunny afternoon, the neighbour’s brown-and-white puppy wandered into the yard, wagging its tail. “Oh, how sweet!” cried Rafi, and he thumped across the yard with his arms wide open, ready to scoop it up. The puppy froze. Then it stepped back, lowered its ears and curled up small, its eyes full of fear.
রাফির মন খারাপ হয়ে গেল। “মা, ও আমাকে পছন্দ করে না কেন?” মা পাশে এসে বসলেন। নরম গলায় বললেন, “প্রাণীরও ভয় লাগে, বাবা। ওদেরও আরাম চাই, নিজের একটু জায়গা চাই। তুমি হঠাৎ ছুটে গেলে ও ভেবেছে বিপদ আসছে। আগে ওকে তোমার কাছে আসতে দাও।”
Rafi’s face fell. “Mum, why doesn’t it like me?” His mother sat down beside him. “Animals feel afraid too,” she said softly. “They need comfort and a little space of their own. When you rushed at it, the puppy thought something scary was coming. Let it come to you first.”
রাফি তাই একটু দূরে মাটিতে চুপটি করে বসল। হাতটা আলতো করে সামনে বাড়িয়ে রাখল, একদম নড়ল না। এক মিনিট গেল, দুই মিনিট গেল। কুকুরছানাটি মাথা তুলে তাকাল, তারপর গুটিগুটি পায়ে এগিয়ে এল। শুঁকে শুঁকে রাফির আঙুলে নাক ছোঁয়াল—ঠান্ডা, ভেজা নাক!
So Rafi sat quietly on the ground a little distance away. He held out his hand gently and kept perfectly still. One minute passed, then two. The puppy lifted its head and looked at him. Then, step by careful step, it crept closer, sniffed and sniffed, and touched his fingers with its nose—cold and wet!

সেদিনের পর রাফি অনেক কিছু খেয়াল করতে শিখল। গরমের দুপুরে সে উঠোনে একটা বাটিতে পরিষ্কার পানি রেখে দিল। চড়ুই পাখিদের জন্য ছড়িয়ে দিল এক মুঠো দানা। কিচিরমিচির করে পাখিরা নেমে এল, আর রাফি দূর থেকে চুপচাপ দেখল।
After that day, Rafi began to notice many things. On hot afternoons he left a bowl of clean water in the yard. He scattered a handful of grain for the sparrows. Chirp, chirp! Down they came, and Rafi watched quietly from a distance.
এখন সে আর কোনো প্রাণীকে ধাওয়া করে না, জোর করে কোলেও নেয় না। বিড়াল ঘুমালে তাকে ঘুমাতে দেয়, ছানাটি হাঁপিয়ে গেলে খেলা থামায়। আর প্রতি বিকেলে কুকুরছানাটি নিজেই লেজ নাড়তে নাড়তে রাফির কাছে চলে আসে—যেন বলে, “চলো বন্ধু, খেলি!”
Now he never chases animals or forces them into his lap. When the cat is sleeping, he lets it sleep. When the puppy is tired and panting, he stops the game. And every afternoon, the puppy trots over to Rafi all by itself, wagging its tail as if to say, “Come on, friend, let’s play!”
