In the middle of a green forest lived the lion, king of the forest. When he roared, even the leaves trembled. One morning after the rain, the lion was walking by the river. The ground was soft and squelchy with mud.
Suddenly he heard, “Help! Is anyone there?” He looked and saw a young deer with one leg stuck deep in the mud. The harder it pulled, the deeper it sank. When it saw the lion, the little deer began to tremble.
The lion could have treated the deer as prey. But he stopped. Seeing the fear in its big eyes, he decided this was a moment to use his strength to help, not to harm. With his powerful paws he scooped away the mud—splosh, splosh. Soon the deer pulled its leg free and leapt onto firm ground.
“Why did you let me go?” asked the deer in surprise. “Because you were in trouble,” said the lion. “Helping someone in trouble is the right thing to do.” The grateful deer bowed its head and ran back into the forest. But it never forgot that day.
A few days later, the lion was roaming the forest when he slipped at the edge of a deep pit—thud! He tumbled in. The walls were steep and slippery. He jumped again and again, but he could not climb out. At last, tired, he gave a mighty roar.
The young deer heard the roar and came running. But it was so small—what could it do alone? Instead of giving up, it raced to its forest friends. “Come quickly! The lion king is in trouble!”
The elephant dragged over a thick branch with its trunk. The monkeys swung from tree to tree, gathering long vines. The deer showed everyone which side of the pit was firm and safe. Together they lowered the branch and pulled on the vines—“Heave-ho, heave-ho!” Slowly, the lion climbed up and out.
Safe at last, the lion looked around in wonder. The small deer he had once saved from the mud had brought the whole forest together. The lion smiled. He understood that good deeds should not be done for a reward, yet kindness wakes kindness in others, and a good deed often finds its way back.
