ভোরের আলো তখনো নরম। নদীর ধারে কাশফুল দুলছে, পানির ওপর ঝিকমিক করছে রোদ। আজ আরিয়ান প্রথমবার দাদুর সঙ্গে মাছ ধরতে এসেছে! তার হাতে নতুন ছিপ, বুকের ভেতর উত্তেজনায় ঢিপঢিপ।
The morning light was still soft. Kash flowers swayed along the riverbank, and sunshine sparkled on the water. Today Arian had come fishing with Grandpa for the very first time! He held a brand-new rod, and his heart was thumping with excitement.
দাদু দেখিয়ে দিলেন কীভাবে বড়শিতে টোপ গাঁথতে হয়। আরিয়ান ছিপ ফেলল—টুপ! লাল-সাদা ভাসাটা পানিতে দুলতে লাগল। আরিয়ান ফিসফিস করে বলল, “দাদু, এখনই মাছ উঠবে, তাই না?” পাঁচ মিনিট গেল, দশ মিনিট গেল—কিছুই হলো না। পানির ওপর শুধু ছোট ছোট ঢেউ ছড়িয়ে গেল।
Grandpa showed him how to put bait on the hook. Arian cast his line—plop! The red-and-white float bobbed on the water. Arian whispered, “Grandpa, a fish will bite right away, won’t it?” Five minutes passed, then ten. Nothing happened except small ripples spreading across the water.
আরিয়ান অধৈর্য হয়ে ছিপ তুলে দেখল, আবার ফেলল। আবার তুলল, আবার ফেলল—ছপাৎ, ছপাৎ! “ধুর! এখানে কোনো মাছই নেই!” বলে সে গাল ফোলাল।
Arian grew impatient. He pulled up the line to look, then threw it back. Pulled it up, threw it back—splash, splash! “Ugh! There are no fish here at all!” he grumbled, puffing out his cheeks.
দাদু হেসে তার কাঁধে হাত রাখলেন। “পানির ঢেউ দেখো, পাখির ডাক শোনো। মাছ ধরার আনন্দ শুধু মাছ পাওয়ায় নয়, অপেক্ষা করতে শেখাতেও আছে। আর বারবার ছিপ নাড়ালে মাছ ভয় পেয়ে আরও দূরে সরে যায়।”
Grandpa laughed and put a hand on his shoulder. “Watch the ripples. Listen to the birds. Fishing isn’t only about catching something—it also teaches us how to wait. And if you keep shaking the line, the fish get frightened and swim further away.”
আরিয়ান এবার চুপটি করে বসে রইল। সে খেয়াল করল, বাতাসে আমগাছের পাতা ঝিরঝির করে নড়ছে। একটা মাছরাঙা টুক করে পানিতে ডুব দিয়ে আবার উড়ে গেল। ভাসাটার পাশে মাঝে মাঝে ছোট্ট বুদবুদ উঠছে—বুড়বুড়। অপেক্ষার সময়টা আর ফাঁকা লাগল না; চারপাশে যে কত কিছু দেখার আছে, তা সে টের পেল।
So Arian sat very still. He noticed the mango leaves rustling in the breeze. A kingfisher dived into the water with a flash and flew off again. Every now and then, tiny bubbles rose beside the float—blub, blub. The waiting no longer felt empty. There were so many things to see once he stopped rushing.
অনেকক্ষণ পর ভাসাটা হঠাৎ কেঁপে উঠল, তারপর আস্তে আস্তে ডুবে গেল। আরিয়ানের ইচ্ছে হলো এখনই হ্যাঁচকা টান দেয়! কিন্তু দাদুর কথা মনে পড়ল। সে দম আটকে আরেকটু অপেক্ষা করল। দাদু ফিসফিস করে বললেন, “এবার!” আরিয়ান ধীরে ছিপ তুলতেই পানির ভেতর থেকে চকচকে রুপালি এক ছোট্ট মাছ বেরিয়ে এল!
Much later, the float suddenly trembled and then slowly sank. Arian wanted to yank the rod at once! But he remembered Grandpa’s words. Holding his breath, he waited a little longer. “Now!” whispered Grandpa. Arian lifted the rod carefully, and out of the water came a small, shining silver fish!
“পেয়েছি! পেয়েছি!” আরিয়ান আনন্দে লাফিয়ে উঠল। দাদু মাছটা দেখে বললেন, “আজকের সবচেয়ে বড় শিকার কিন্তু মাছ নয়—তোমার ধৈর্য।” আরিয়ান হেসে ছোট্ট মাছটিকে আবার পানিতে ছেড়ে দিল। মাছটা লেজ নেড়ে টুপ করে হারিয়ে গেল।
“I got one! I got one!” Arian jumped with joy. Grandpa looked at the fish and said, “The biggest catch today isn’t the fish—it’s your patience.” Arian laughed and gently let the little fish go. It flicked its tail and vanished—plip!
ফেরার পথে আরিয়ান ভাবল, অপেক্ষা করতে জানা মানে সময় নষ্ট করা নয়। ধৈর্য ধরলে ঠিক মুহূর্তটা চেনা যায়, আর তখনই আসে সবচেয়ে সেরা ফল।
On the way home, Arian thought about it. Knowing how to wait isn’t wasting time. Patience helps us recognise the right moment, and that is when the best results come.
