During a school ‘week of helping’, the children learn to notice what others need—guiding a new student in the library, carrying a heavy poster, collecting books for younger children. Rimi thinks she has nothing to give until she uses her drawing skill to make labels for the book boxes and bookmarks for the little readers.

On Monday morning the school bell rang—ding, dong! After assembly, the teacher announced, “Starting today, it’s our ‘week of helping’!” Happy whispers filled the class. The teacher added, “But remember, helping doesn’t always mean giving money. First keep your eyes and ears open, and notice what someone actually needs.”

All day long, the children paid attention. A new student was looking around the library, unable to find the right shelves. Two friends went over with a smile. “Come on, we’ll show you.”

In the corridor, another classmate was wobbling along with a huge poster—it looked as if it might fall any moment! Two children ran to grab both ends. “One, two, three—let’s go!” The poster reached the classroom safely.

Then came the big project: collecting books for younger children in a nearby neighbourhood. Anyone with extra storybooks at home wiped them clean and brought them in. Soon a pile of books grew in the corner of the classroom—picture books, rhyme books, fairy tales.

But Rimi felt sad. She didn’t have any extra books. “I have nothing to give,” she thought quietly. Sitting by the window, she was absent-mindedly drawing a butterfly in the corner of her notebook. Suddenly an idea popped into her head—wait, I’m good at drawing!

The next day, Rimi brought coloured pencils, scissors and bright paper. She made beautiful labels for the book boxes—one with a smiling sun, one with a boat, one with an elephant. And for the younger readers she made lots of colourful bookmarks, so they would always remember where they had stopped reading.

When everyone saw the boxes, they cried, “Wow!” The teacher smiled. “The most important part of helping is learning to notice what is needed. Then each of us can help with whatever we have.”

On her way home that day, Rimi felt bright inside. She understood that even a small skill can become a big help when it is used for someone who needs it.
