ঈদের সকাল! নতুন জামা পরে ইমরান সবাইকে সালাম করল, আর পেল ঝকঝকে নতুন নোটের সালামি। টাকাগুলো মুঠোয় নিয়ে সে লাফিয়ে উঠল, “মা, এখনই দোকানে যাই? ওই লাল রেসিং কারটা কিনব, আর রোবটটাও!”
It was Eid morning! Wearing his new clothes, Imran greeted everyone and received crisp new notes as Eid money. Clutching the money, he jumped up. “Mum, can we go to the shop right now? I want that red racing car, and the robot too!”
মা হেসে পাশে বসলেন। “সব টাকা একবারে খরচ করে ফেলবে? একটা বুদ্ধি দিই শোনো—কিছু খরচ করো, কিছু সঞ্চয় করো, আর কিছু রাখো ভালো কাজের জন্য।” ইমরান ভাবল, ব্যাপারটা তো মন্দ নয়! সে তিনটি ছোট খাম বানাল, আর নিজের হাতে বড় বড় করে লিখল—খরচ, সঞ্চয়, সাহায্য। খামগুলো জায়গা পেল তার পড়ার ডেস্কের পাশে।
Mum smiled and sat down beside him. “Will you spend it all at once? Here’s an idea—spend some, save some, and keep some for helping others.” Imran thought that sounded rather good! He made three small envelopes and wrote on them in big letters: Spend, Save, Share. The envelopes found a place beside his study desk.

In the first week, the Save envelope filled very slowly. Whenever Imran saw shiny toys behind a shop window, he wanted to spend everything. So he wrote his goal on a piece of paper: “I will buy a science kit!”—a kit with a little magnet, a magnifying glass and colourful test tubes.
প্রতিবার খামে টাকা রাখার পর সে খাতায় হিসাব লিখত, আর দেখত লক্ষ্যে পৌঁছাতে আর কত বাকি। ছোট ছোট অঙ্কগুলো একটু একটু করে বড় হতে দেখে তার বুকটা গর্বে ভরে যেত।
Each time he put money in the envelope, he wrote the amount in a notebook and checked how much more he needed. Watching the small numbers grow little by little made him swell with pride.
তাই বলে ইমরান আনন্দ বন্ধ করেনি। খরচের খাম থেকে সে মাঝে মাঝে একটা আইসক্রিম বা ছোট্ট একটা স্টিকার কিনত। আর সাহায্যের খাম থেকে টাকা দিল যখন পাড়ার এক পরিবারের ঘরে বন্যার পানি ঢুকেছিল। ফলে সঞ্চয় তার কাছে শাস্তি মনে হলো না; বরং টাকা কোথায় যাচ্ছে তা বুঝে সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়ার মজার একটা অভ্যাস হয়ে উঠল।
That didn’t mean Imran stopped having fun. From the Spend envelope he sometimes bought an ice cream or a small sticker. And he used the Share envelope when floodwater got into a neighbour’s house. Saving no longer felt like a punishment; it became a fun habit of deciding where his money should go.
কয়েক মাস পর হিসাব করে দেখা গেল, কিট কেনার টাকা প্রায় জমে গেছে! ঠিক তখনই এক সকালে—ফটাস! স্কুলব্যাগের চেইনটা ছিঁড়ে গেল। বই-খাতা সব প্রায় পড়ে যাচ্ছিল।
A few months later, his notebook showed that he had almost enough for the kit! Then one morning—rrrip! The zip on his schoolbag broke. His books and notebooks nearly tumbled out.
আগে হলে ইমরান মন খারাপ করে বাবা-মায়ের কাছে টাকা চাইত। কিন্তু এবার সে নিজেই সঞ্চয়ের খাম খুলল। জমানো টাকা থেকে ব্যাগটা সারানো হলো, কাউকে অস্বস্তিতে পড়তে হলো না। আর মজার ব্যাপার, কিটের জন্যও কিছু টাকা তখনো খামে রয়ে গেল।
In the past, Imran would have sulked and asked his parents for money. This time he opened the Save envelope himself. His savings paid for the repair, and nobody was put in a difficult spot. Best of all, some money was still left in the envelope for the science kit.
সেদিন ইমরান বুঝল, সঞ্চয় মানে আনন্দ বন্ধ করা নয়। হাতে টাকা থাকতেই একটু একটু জমালে আগামী দিনের প্রয়োজন আর স্বপ্ন—দুটোই সহজ হয়ে যায়।
That day Imran learned that saving doesn’t mean giving up fun. When you save a little while you have some money, tomorrow’s needs and dreams both become easier.
