হলুদ রঙের পাখিThe Yellow-Colored Bird

এক বড় গাছের ডালে ছোট্ট একটা বাসা। সেই বাসায় থাকত এক হলুদ রঙের পাখি আর তার মা। হলুদ পাখির মাথায় ছোট্ট ঝুঁটি, গায়ের রং কাঁচা হলুদের মতো উজ্জ্বল। সকালবেলা রোদ উঠলে তাকে দেখাত একফালি সোনালি আলোর মতো।

On a branch of a big tree was a little nest, where a yellow bird lived with its mother. The yellow bird had a small crest on its head, and its feathers were as bright as fresh turmeric. When the morning sun shone, it looked like a little piece of golden light.

একদিন ভোরে উড়ে এল তার বন্ধু নীল পাখি। “চলো হলুদ পাখি, আজ সারাদিন খেলব!” মা বললেন, “যাও, তবে বেশি দূরে যেয়ো না, আর সময়মতো ঘরে ফিরো।” হলুদ পাখি মাথা নেড়ে বলল, “আচ্ছা মা!” তারপর হলুদ পাখি আর নীল পাখি একসঙ্গে উড়ে চলল।

Early one morning its friend the blue bird flew over. “Come on, yellow bird, let's play all day!” Mother said, “Go on, but don't go too far, and come home on time.” The yellow bird nodded. “All right, Mother!” And off flew the yellow bird and the blue bird together.

এ গাছ থেকে সে গাছ, সে গাছ থেকে আরেক গাছ—তারা উড়তে উড়তে, লাফাতে লাফাতে, খেলতে খেলতে চলল। পথে দেখা হলো সবুজ টিয়া পাখির সঙ্গে, লম্বা লেজের কালো ফিঙে পাখির সঙ্গে, কিচিরমিচির চড়ুই পাখির সঙ্গে, আর বকবকম ঘুঘু পাখির সঙ্গে। আরও কত পাখি! সবাই মিলে লুকোচুরি খেলা, ডালে দোল খাওয়া, পাকা ফল ঠোকরানো—কী যে মজা!

From this tree to that tree, and from that tree to the next, they flew and hopped and played. On the way they met a green parrot, a black drongo with a long forked tail, a chattering sparrow and a cooing dove, and so many other birds! Together they played hide-and-seek, swung on branches and pecked at ripe fruit. What fun it was!

দুপুর হলো। রোদ বাড়ল। হলুদ পাখি ঘরে ফিরল না। বাসায় মা পাখি বারবার ডালের আগায় এসে চারদিকে তাকান। “আমার হলুদ পাখি কোথায় গেল?”

Noon came. The sun grew hot. The yellow bird did not come home. Back at the nest, Mother bird kept hopping to the end of the branch and looking all around. “Where has my yellow bird gone?”

বিকেল হলো। রোদ কমল। হলুদ পাখি তবু ঘরে ফিরল না। খেলার নেশায় সে সব ভুলে গেছে। টিয়া, ফিঙে, চড়ুই, ঘুঘু—সবাই একে একে নিজেদের বাসায় ফিরে গেল। নীল পাখিও বলল, “বন্ধু, এবার যাই, মা ডাকবেন।”

Afternoon came. The sun grew gentle. Still the yellow bird did not come home. It had forgotten everything in the fun of playing. The parrot, the drongo, the sparrow and the dove went back to their nests one by one. The blue bird said, “Friend, I should go now. My mother will be calling.”

হঠাৎ হলুদ পাখি খেয়াল করল, চারপাশ কেমন চুপচাপ। আকাশে উঠেছে ফ্যাকাশে হলুদ এক ফালি চাঁদ। ঠান্ডা হাওয়া বইছে শিরশির করে। তার মনে পড়ল মায়ের কথা—“সময়মতো ঘরে ফিরো।” বুকটা ধক করে উঠল। “মা নিশ্চয়ই খুব চিন্তা করছেন!”

Suddenly the yellow bird noticed how quiet everything had become. A pale yellow sliver of moon had risen in the sky, and a cool breeze was blowing. It remembered Mother's words: “Come home on time.” Its heart jumped. “Mother must be so worried!”

হলুদ পাখি প্রাণপণে ডানা মেলে উড়ল। নীল পাখি তাকে পথ দেখিয়ে নিয়ে চলল চেনা বড় গাছটার দিকে। দূর থেকেই দেখা গেল, বাসার ধারে মা বসে আছেন, চোখে উদ্বেগ।

The yellow bird spread its wings and flew as fast as it could. The blue bird showed the way to the big, familiar tree. Even from far away they could see Mother sitting at the edge of the nest, her eyes full of worry.

হলুদ পাখি ফুড়ুৎ করে নেমে মায়ের ডানার নিচে ঢুকে পড়ল। “মা, আমাকে মাফ করো। খেলতে খেলতে সময়ের কথা ভুলে গিয়েছিলাম।” মা তাকে জড়িয়ে ধরে বললেন, “তুমি ভালোয় ভালোয় ফিরেছ, এতেই আমি খুশি। খেলা খুব ভালো জিনিস, সোনা, কিন্তু সময়মতো ঘরে ফিরতে হয়, যাতে আপনজনেরা চিন্তা না করে।” সেদিন থেকে হলুদ পাখি খেলে ঠিকই, কিন্তু সূর্য ডোবার আগেই বাসায় ফিরে আসে।

The yellow bird swooped down and tucked itself under Mother's wing. “Mother, I'm sorry. I was playing and forgot all about the time.” Mother hugged it close. “You're home safe, and that makes me happy. Playing is a wonderful thing, my dear, but we must come home on time, so the people who love us don't worry.” From that day the yellow bird still played, but it always flew home before the sun went down.
