এক সবুজ মাঠের কোণে ছোট্ট একটা বাড়িতে থাকত এক খরগোশ। তার কান দুটো লম্বা, লেজটা তুলোর বলের মতো, আর গাজর তার সবচেয়ে প্রিয় খাবার। একদিন সে ভাবল, “রোজ রোজ অন্যের খেত থেকে গাজর খুঁজে আনি কেন? আমি নিজেই একটা বাগান বানাব!”
In a little house at the corner of a green meadow lived a rabbit with long ears, a tail like a cotton ball and a great love of carrots. One day he thought, “Why should I hunt for carrots in other people's fields every day? I'll make a garden of my own!”
যেমন ভাবা, তেমন কাজ। খরগোশ কোদাল দিয়ে মাটি খুঁড়ল—ঠুক-ঠাক, ঠুক-ঠাক। নরম মাটিতে সারি সারি গাজরের বীজ বুনল, চারপাশে বেড়া দিল। তারপর ঝারি ভরে জল দিল—ঝিরঝির, ঝিরঝির। কাজ শেষে সে খুশিতে লাফাতে লাগল।
No sooner said than done. The rabbit dug the soil with his spade, thump-thump, thump-thump. He sowed rows of carrot seeds in the soft earth and built a fence around them. Then he filled his watering can and sprinkled the beds, drip-drip, drip-drip. When the work was done, he hopped about with joy.
বিকেলে বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে দেখা হতেই খরগোশ বলল, “শোনো সবাই, আমি গাজরের বাগান করেছি! কাল সকালে চলে এসো, সবাই মিলে গাজর তুলব।” বন্ধুরা তো মহাখুশি। “বাহ্, খরগোশ ভাই, কাল আসছি!”
That afternoon he met his friends and announced, “Listen, everyone, I've made a carrot garden! Come over tomorrow morning and we'll all pull carrots together.” His friends were thrilled. “Wonderful, brother rabbit! We'll be there!”
পরের দিন সকালে কাঠবিড়ালী, ভেড়াছানা, ছাগলছানা, কুকুরছানা, বিড়ালছানা আর পাখিরা সবাই এসে হাজির, হাতে ঝুড়ি। কিন্তু বাগানে উঁকি দিয়ে তারা অবাক। ছাগলছানা বলল, “খরগোশ ভাই, তুমি তো বললে গাজর তুলতে আসতে! গাজর কই? তোমার বাগানে তো শুধু ছোট্ট ছোট্ট চারাগাছ!”
The next morning the squirrel, the lamb, the little goat, the puppy, the kitten and the birds all arrived with baskets. But when they peeked into the garden, they were puzzled. The little goat said, “Brother rabbit, you told us to come and pull carrots! Where are they? There are only tiny seedlings in your garden!”
খরগোশের কান দুটো লজ্জায় ঝুলে পড়ল। সে ভেবেছিল, বীজ বুনলেই পরদিন গাজর হয়ে যাবে! বুড়ো কাঠবিড়ালী হেসে বলল, “আরে বোকা, গাছ কি এক রাতে বড় হয়? রোজ জল দিতে হবে, আগাছা তুলতে হবে, আর ধৈর্য ধরে অপেক্ষা করতে হবে।”
The rabbit's ears drooped with embarrassment. He had thought that if he sowed seeds, there would be carrots the very next day! The old squirrel laughed. “Silly, plants don't grow up overnight. You have to water them every day, pull out the weeds and wait patiently.”
খরগোশ মন খারাপ না করে মাথা নেড়ে বলল, “ঠিক আছে, আমি অপেক্ষা করব আর যত্ন নেব।” বন্ধুরাও বলল, “আমরাও তোমাকে সাহায্য করব।” সেদিন থেকে কাঠবিড়ালী আগাছা তোলে, পাখিরা পোকা খুঁটে খায়, কুকুরছানা পাহারা দেয়, আর খরগোশ রোজ সকালে জল দেয়। টুপটাপ বৃষ্টিও এসে মাঝে মাঝে সাহায্য করে যায়।
The rabbit didn't sulk. He nodded and said, “All right, I'll wait and take good care of them.” His friends said, “We'll help you too.” From then on the squirrel pulled weeds, the birds pecked away the insects, the puppy kept watch and the rabbit watered the beds every morning. Sometimes the pattering rain came to help as well.
দিন যায়, সপ্তাহ যায়। চারাগাছগুলো বড় হয়, সবুজ পাতা ঝাঁকড়া হয়ে ওঠে। একদিন খরগোশ একটা পাতা ধরে আলতো টান দিতেই মাটি থেকে বেরিয়ে এল টকটকে কমলা রঙের মোটা একটা গাজর!
Days passed, then weeks. The seedlings grew taller and their green leaves grew thick and bushy. One day the rabbit took hold of a leaf and gave it a gentle tug, and out of the soil came a big, bright orange carrot!
খরগোশ দৌড়ে গিয়ে সব বন্ধুকে ডেকে আনল। এবার সত্যিই সবাই মিলে গাজর তুলল, ঝুড়ি ভরে গেল। বাগানের মাঝে বসে হল গাজরের ভোজ—কুড়মুড়, কুড়মুড়! খরগোশ হেসে বলল, “এখন বুঝেছি, যত্ন, পরিশ্রম আর ধৈর্য থাকলে তবেই বাগান ভরে ওঠে।”
The rabbit ran to fetch all his friends. This time they really did pull carrots together, and the baskets filled up. They sat in the middle of the garden for a carrot feast, crunch-crunch! The rabbit smiled and said, “Now I understand. A garden fills up only with care, hard work and patience.”
