At the edge of a forest stood an apple tree, its branches full of bright red apples. On one branch a little yellow bird called Tuktuki had built a nest of straw and twigs. In it lay her two tiny eggs. All day Tuktuki sat on her eggs and sang sweet songs.

In that forest lived a bullying elephant, as bad-tempered as he was strong. As he walked he broke trees, trampled bushes and listened to no one. One hot afternoon, feeling cross, he grabbed the apple tree with his trunk and shook it hard. “I'll do whatever I like!”

The branches creaked and swayed. Tuktuki begged, “Brother elephant, stop! There are eggs in my nest!” But the elephant didn't listen. Down fell the nest, and the two eggs broke. The elephant stomped away, and Tuktuki sat beside her broken nest and cried.

Hearing her cry, her friend Kalu the black woodpecker flew over. Gungunee the bee came buzzing, and Bheku the frog hopped up from the pond. When he heard everything, Kalu said, “We are small, but if we put our heads together we can teach that proud elephant a lesson.”

They made a plan. The next afternoon Gungunee went and hummed a sweet tune in the elephant's ear. The elephant grew drowsy, closed his eyes and swayed happily. Just then Kalu flew up and flapped his wings in front of the elephant's face, stirring up a cloud of dust. With dust in his eyes, the elephant couldn't see a thing!

Rubbing his eyes, the elephant felt very thirsty. “Water! Where's the water?” Then Bheku sat beside a deep muddy pit in the middle of the forest and began to croak, “Ribbit-croak! Ribbit-croak!” The elephant thought, where a frog croaks, there must be a pond. He followed the sound step by step.

And then, splosh! The elephant walked right into the muddy pit. His feet stuck fast in the sticky mud. The more he pulled, the deeper he sank, until at last he stood there, tired and panting. From a branch above, Tuktuki said, “Do you see now, brother elephant? No one should hurt others just because they are small.”

The elephant hung his head. “I was wrong, little bird. Please forgive me. I will never break anyone's nest again.” That evening the other elephants of his herd came and pulled him out of the mud with their trunks. From then on he walked carefully, and Tuktuki and her friends built a new nest on a new branch. When the small stand together, even a big wrong can be put right.
