টুনটুনি আর রাজার কথাThe Tailorbird and the King

রাজবাড়ির বাগানে এক বেগুন গাছের ডালে বাসা বেঁধেছিল ছোট্ট এক টুনটুনি। একদিন রাজার কোষাগারের টাকাগুলো রোদে শুকাতে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। সন্ধ্যায় সেপাইরা টাকা তুলে নিয়ে গেল, কিন্তু একটা চকচকে টাকা গড়িয়ে পড়ে রইল ঘাসের ভেতর।

A tiny tailorbird had built her nest on an aubergine plant in the palace garden. One day the coins from the king's treasury were spread out in the sun to dry. In the evening the guards carried them away, but one shiny coin rolled into the grass and stayed behind.

টুনটুনি টাকাটা ঠোঁটে করে বাসায় নিয়ে এল। তারপর বুক ফুলিয়ে গান ধরল, “রাজার ঘরে যে ধন আছে, টুনির ঘরেও সে ধন আছে!” টুং-টাং সুরে গানটা গিয়ে পৌঁছাল রাজসভায়।

The tailorbird carried the coin to her nest in her beak. Then she puffed out her chest and sang, “Whatever riches the king has got, the tailorbird has them too, a lot!” Her tinkling song floated all the way to the royal court.

রাজা ভুরু কুঁচকে বললেন, “কী বলে পাখিটা? দেখো তো!” সেপাই গিয়ে বাসা থেকে টাকাটা নিয়ে এল। টুনটুনি অমনি গাইল, “রাজা বড় ধনে কাতর, টুনির টাকা নিল ঘরের ভিতর!” সভার সবাই মুখ টিপে হাসল। রাজার কান লাল হয়ে গেল। “দাও, দাও, ফিরিয়ে দাও ওর টাকা!”

The king frowned. “What is that bird saying? Go and see!” A guard went and took the coin from the nest. At once the tailorbird sang, “The king is so greedy for money, you see, he took the coin away from me!” The courtiers hid their smiles. The king's ears turned red. “Give it back, give the bird its coin back!”

টাকা ফেরত পেয়ে টুনটুনি আরও জোরে গাইল, “রাজা বড় ভয় পেল, টুনির টাকা ফিরিয়ে দিল!” এবার রাজা রেগে আগুন। “ধরো ওই পাখিকে! আজ ওর একদিন কি আমার একদিন!”

When she got the coin back, the tailorbird sang even louder, “The king got such a terrible fright, he gave my coin back, quick as a kite!” Now the king was furious. “Catch that bird! I'll teach her a lesson today!”

সেপাইরা টুনটুনিকে ধরে রানিদের মহলে রেখে এল। সাত রানি পাখিটাকে হাতে হাতে নিয়ে দেখছেন, “আহা, কী ছোট্ট!” এক রানির হাত থেকে আরেক রানির হাতে দিতে যেতেই—ফুড়ুৎ! টুনটুনি জানালা দিয়ে উড়ে গিয়ে বসল গাছের মগডালে, আর গাইল, “সাত রানির চোখে ধুলো, টুনি পাখি উড়ে গেলো!”

The guards caught the tailorbird and left her in the queens' palace. The seven queens passed the little bird from hand to hand. “Oh, how tiny she is!” As one queen was handing her to another, whoosh! The tailorbird flew out of the window to the top of a tree and sang, “Dust in the eyes of seven queens, I'm off and away, as you have seen!”

রাজা নিজেই এবার বাগানে ছুটে এলেন। অনেক কষ্টে খপ করে টুনটুনিকে মুঠোয় ধরে বললেন, “এবার? এবার তোকে আস্ত গিলে ফেলব!” তিনি মুখের কাছে মুঠো তুলতেই টুনটুনি তার লেজের পালক দিয়ে রাজার নাকে দিল সুড়সুড়ি।

This time the king came running into the garden himself. After a lot of trouble he grabbed the tailorbird in his fist. “Now what? Now I'll swallow you whole!” But as he raised his fist to his mouth, the tailorbird tickled the king's nose with her tail feathers.

“হা… হা… হাঁচ্চো!” এমন জোরে হাঁচি দিলেন রাজা যে মুঠো খুলে গেল, আর টুনটুনি ছিটকে বেরিয়ে এল। পাশে দাঁড়ানো সেপাই পাখি ধরতে বড় হাতপাখাটা জোরে ঘোরাল—আর ধপাস! পাখা গিয়ে লাগল রাজামশাইয়ের নাকেই! রাজার নাক ফুলে হয়ে গেল টুকটুকে লাল টমেটোর মতো।

“Ah… ah… ACHOO!” The king sneezed so hard that his fist flew open and out shot the tailorbird. A guard standing nearby swung his big hand-fan to catch her, and thwack! The fan landed right on the king's nose. The king's nose swelled up like a bright red tomato.

টুনটুনি ততক্ষণে উড়ে গিয়ে বসেছে বেগুন গাছের ডালে। সেখান থেকে সে গাইল, “নাক-ফোলা রাজা রে, দেখ তো কেমন সাজা রে!” রাজা নাকে হাত দিয়ে চুপচাপ ফিরে গেলেন। সেদিনের পর থেকে তিনি আর ছোট্ট পাখিটার পিছনে লাগেননি। ছোট্ট টুনটুনি বুঝিয়ে দিল, ছোট হলেও বুদ্ধি আর সাহস থাকলে বড় শক্তির সামনেও মাথা উঁচু রাখা যায়।

By then the tailorbird was back on her aubergine branch. From there she sang, “Oh king with a swollen nose so red, that's what you get, enough said!” Holding his nose, the king quietly went back inside, and after that day he never bothered the little bird again. The tiny tailorbird had shown that even someone small can hold her head high before the mighty, with wit and courage.
