In a village lived Kashem the weaver. All day long his loom went clackety-clack, but after paying for thread he had almost nothing left. One day he thought, “If I had a horse, I could carry traders’ goods from market to market and earn well.” So he sold his loom for three taka and set off for the market.
At the market he learned that a horse cost two or three hundred taka, and even a foal cost thirty or forty. Kashem scratched his head. “Then I’ll buy a horse’s egg! It will hatch into a foal, and the foal will grow into a horse!” He went around asking, “Brother, have you got a horse’s egg?” People laughed until they rolled on the ground.
At last a trickster grinned and said, “Of course I have! Five taka.” After much pleading he took the three taka and handed Kashem a ripe musk melon. “Hurry home. When it cracks, the foal will pop out!” Kashem hugged the melon happily and set off at a brisk pace.
On the way he put the melon down by a pond and went to wash his hands and face. Meanwhile the ripe melon split open with a pop, and a jackal, drawn by the sweet smell, began to eat it. When Kashem came back, he gasped. “My foal has hatched!” Rope in hand, he chased after it. But a jackal won’t be caught so easily, and it slipped into the jungle.
Night fell. At the edge of the jungle, Kashem asked a kind old Nanu for shelter. She gave him a quilt and pillow in the outer room. But Kashem could not sleep. He sat up with his rope, in case his foal came by. Before dawn it began to rain, pitter-patter, pitter-patter. Just then a tiger crept up and crouched behind the house. In the dark, Kashem thought, “There’s my foal!”
Inside, Nanu’s granddaughter Ayesha woke up and begged, “Nanu, get me my doll!” Nanu said, “Hush, darling. There’s fear of tigers, and on top of that this pitter-patter! I’ll fetch it in the morning.” She only meant the rain. But the tiger thought, “Pitter-Patter? What creature is that? It must be even fiercer than a tiger!” Terrified, he raised his tail and ran.
Kashem thought his foal was escaping! In one leap he landed on the tiger’s back and grabbed the fur on its neck with both hands. The tiger thought, “Help! Pitter-Patter is on my back!” All night he ran this way and that, but he could not shake Kashem off. In the morning light, Kashem saw that it was not a horse at all, but a tiger! His heart thumped. As they passed under a big tree, he grabbed a branch and scrambled up.
Panting, the tiger told the whole tiger clan. An old tiger twitched his whiskers. “We are tigers. Who could be stronger than us? Let’s go and see!” Some wrapped in quilts, some wearing broken clay pots as helmets, all the tigers gathered under the tree. The branch was high, so one tiger climbed on the old tiger’s shoulders, another on his, and another on his: a tower of tigers! Just as the top tiger nearly reached Kashem, he lost his grip in fright and tumbled down, rope and all, right onto the old tiger’s neck.
The old tiger howled, “Help, Pitter-Patter has come to tie me up!” Off he ran, and the tigers above came tumbling down, thud, bump, and fled in every direction. Kashem dusted himself off. “Alhamdulillah, I’m safe!” Then he headed straight home. From that day on, he never bought a ‘horse’s egg’ from anyone again; he always stopped to think whether a thing could really be true.
