There was once a King who owned many elephants. The biggest and most handsome of them all was his royal elephant. The King rode on his back and fed him banana stems and sugar cane with his own hands. That elephant was the apple of his eye.

After many years, the old royal elephant died one day of old age. The King wept a great deal. Then, being brave, he said, “Take him out to the open field far away.” Five hundred men tied thick ropes to him and, heave-ho, heave-ho, hauled him out to the field.

At the edge of that field lived a skinny fox who had not eaten for days. When he found such an enormous feast, he was overjoyed! He ate and ate, and in his greed he went right inside the elephant’s tummy. Two days passed, and still he did not stop eating.

Meanwhile, the hot sun dried the elephant’s skin tight, and the hole he had crept through grew smaller. And the fox had eaten himself round and fat. When he tried to get out, he was stuck! His head fitted through, but his tummy would not. “Oh no, what now?” Now the fox learned what greed can do.

Just then three farmers came walking past. The fox had an idea. From inside the elephant he made his voice deep and booming. “Listen, brothers! Go and tell the King that if fifty pots of ghee are rubbed on me, I will stand up again!” The farmers jumped out of their skins. “Goodness, the dead elephant is talking!” They ran all the way to the palace.

The King was beside himself with joy. “My royal elephant will rise again? Why fifty? Take a thousand pots of ghee!” At once a thousand porters marched to the field with pots of ghee on their heads. For seven days only one cry was heard there: “Bring the ghee! Pour the ghee! Rub, rub, rub!”

All that ghee made the skin soft again, and the hole grew wide. The fox knew his moment had come. He called out from inside, “Everyone stand back! I’m getting up! If I feel dizzy and fall on someone, don’t blame me!” What a scramble! “Out of the way, the elephant’s getting up!” Everyone dropped their pots and ran in every direction. Nobody dared even look back.

In that moment the fox wriggled out and vanished into the forest. Much later, people crept back nervously and found the elephant lying exactly where he had been. A wise village elder shook his head. “What Allah has taken does not come back. We should not believe everything we hear.” The King felt foolish, but he shared out the leftover pots of ghee among the poor families of the village.

And the fox? For the rest of his life he remembered: when your tummy is full, stop. Too much greed can trap you in a place that is very hard to get out of.
