Beside a wide river, where white kash grass swayed and water lilies bloomed, lived a flock of white ducks. Every morning they waddled into the water, quack-quacking, and dived for snails and water weeds. The oldest duck in the flock was Granny Dholi. She always said, “However much fun the water is, keep your eyes and ears open.”
A huge crocodile lived in the same river. It had a rough back, sharp teeth and only one thought in its head: how to catch a nice plump duck. But the ducks always stayed together, and at the smallest sound they flew away.
One day the crocodile made a plan. It floated very still, like a dead log, with only its eyes above the water. Then it called in a honey-sweet voice, “Duck sisters! Across the river, juicy water fruits are ripe in the lotus pond. Climb on my back and I'll take you there!”
Little Tupu the duckling jumped up. “Ooh, water fruits! Let's go!” But Granny Dholi stretched her neck and looked carefully. Since when do logs have eyes? And what about that jagged tail? She whispered, “Stop, everyone. That's not a log, it's a crocodile. Don't be fooled by sweet words.”
Granny gathered everyone close and told them her plan. “None of us goes near it alone. We all stay together. When I call ‘quack-quack-quack’ three times, we all fly up at once.” The ducks nodded.
The crocodile saw that the ducks were not coming. Losing patience, it began to swim slowly towards them, the water rippling, splish-splash. Suddenly it opened its enormous jaws and lunged at the flock!
“Quack-quack-quack!” At Granny's call the river filled with the flapping of wings. The whole flock of white ducks rose into the sky together. The crocodile got nothing but a mouthful of water and two lily pads. Even the fish leapt out of the water as if they were clapping.
Landing in the tall grass on the far bank, Tupu panted, “Granny, what would have happened without you?” Granny laughed and hugged her with a wing. “Remember, don't always trust sweet words. In danger, keep a cool head and use your wits, and when we all stick together, no danger is too big.”
