At the edge of the forest, where the paddy fields came to an end, lived a fox. His greatest pride was his tail—reddish-brown, bushy as a broom, with a little white tip. As he walked, it swished from side to side, and he loved to peek and see who was admiring it.
One night, while sniffing around for a stray hen, he stepped into a hunter’s trap. Snap! The iron jaws caught his tail. He pulled and twisted and wriggled until at last he was free—but his beautiful tail did not come with him.
At dawn he saw his reflection in the river, and his heart thumped. Behind him was only a short stump! “Oh no, how can I ever show my face?” The others would surely laugh and call him ‘Stumpy’. All day he curled up behind a bush, wondering how to stop anyone from talking about his missing tail.
Then a sly idea came to him. “If nobody has a tail, nobody can laugh at me!” The next morning he called all the foxes together under the banyan tree. Puffing out his chest, he declared, “Friends, I have important news! Tails are nothing but trouble. They catch on bushes when we run, they get covered in mud, and in summer they make us terribly hot. You can’t imagine how light I feel without one! Why don’t we all cut ours off?”
The foxes glanced at one another. A few young ones began to whisper. One twisted round to look at his own fluffy tail and asked, “Is life really better without a tail?”
The tailless fox spoke even louder. “Of course it is! No flies, no burrs, and it’s much easier to roll over in your sleep!” He listed one advantage after another. But all the while he kept shifting about, trying to hide his little stump.
On a rock nearby sat an old fox who had been listening quietly. He noticed the worry behind the bold words. Slowly he stood up and asked in a calm voice, “Tell me, brother—if you still had your tail today, would you be giving us the same advice?” The clearing went silent. Only the dry leaves rustled.
The tailless fox had no answer. He lowered his head, and his ears drooped. He realised it had been wrong to try to make everyone like him just to hide his own shame. If he had told the truth from the start, he thought, his friends might not have laughed at all; they might have understood how he felt.
From that day on, the foxes remembered: saying something loudly does not make it true. Before following advice, find out the reason behind it. And never pull others toward a bad choice just to cover up your own trouble.
