Long ago, a king had a wonderful garden. In the middle was a clear pool with a fountain that sprinkled water all day long, and the air smelled of roses, jasmine and lotus. Three golden swans lived in that pool. When the sun touched their feathers, they sparkled like real gold.

Now and then the swans gave the king one golden feather as a gift. The pleased king placed tiny crowns on their heads, and that was when the swans' heads began to swell. They lifted their necks high and said, “This pool belongs to us alone. Who is as beautiful as we are?”

Whenever other birds came to drink, the swans flapped their wings and chased them away. The sparrows, mynas and magpie-robins sat sadly at a distance. Nobody dared to say a word.

One afternoon a large pink bird flew in from far away. It was very tired from its long journey. It landed at the edge of the pool and asked gently, “Friends, I have come a long way. May I have a little water and rest here tonight?”

The eldest swan turned up its beak. “Certainly not! This pool is ours. We give the king golden feathers, so we rule here. We don't care about any king. Go away and find somewhere else!” The other two swans giggled.

The pink bird felt very hurt. It flew to the king, bowed its head and told him everything: how the swans drove away the other birds, and what they had said about the king himself. The king grew very angry. “Such pride! Guards, go and bring those swans to me!”

The guards came stomping towards the pool. When the eldest swan saw them, its heart jumped. Suddenly it understood how foolish they had been. “Sisters, our pride has made us blind. We cannot stay here now. Let's fly!” The three spread their wings and whooshed up into the sky.

Far away they landed on a small village pond. There was no fountain and there were no golden crowns. But the ducks, herons and kingfishers kindly made room for them. The swans lowered their heads in shame. From that day on they never chased anyone away. When a tired bird arrived, they were the first to call, “Come, friend, drink and rest.” Pride had cost them their lovely pool, and humility gave them many new friends.
