In the middle of a green forest was an open meadow full of flowers, and there lived a peacock. His tail was a festival of colours: blue, green and gold, with a shiny eye-pattern on every feather. Whenever it rained he spread his tail and danced, and the whole forest watched in wonder. Through the pitter-patter of the rain, his loud call could be heard from far away.
But the peacock was very proud. Every morning he admired his reflection in the pond and said, “Ah! No one in this forest is as beautiful as I am.” Whenever he saw other birds, he turned up his beak and walked away.
One day a crane landed by the pond. It was white and grey, with a small red patch on its head like a cap, and very long legs. The crane stood quietly in the water, looking for fish.
The peacock burst out laughing. “Oh my! What kind of bird is this? No colours at all, so plain and pale! Look how beautiful my tail is!” And he spread his glittering tail wide. Even the butterflies stopped to stare.
The crane did not get angry. It smiled and said, “It's true, brother, your feathers are very beautiful. Mine are not so colourful. But look at this.” It spread its broad wings and, with a whoosh, rose high into the sky, close to the clouds.
From above the crane called, “I can fly up to the land of the clouds. I can see rivers, hills and faraway villages. Why don't you come too?” The peacock flapped and jumped, but with his heavy tail he only reached a low branch. Puffing and panting, he sat down.
The crane flew down and said gently, “Beautiful feathers are lovely to look at, my friend. But everyone has their own gifts. We should never look down on anyone because of how they look.”
The peacock bowed his head in shame. “You're right, brother crane. I was wrong.” From that day the peacock never laughed at anyone again. He still dances with his tail spread when it rains, and whenever the crane flies overhead, he calls up from the meadow, “Have a good journey, friend!”

Useful abilities matter more than looks; never look down on anyone because of their appearance.
