Tiger Uncle

A clever jackal keeps tricking his foolish Tiger Uncle: he hides a well under a mat so the tiger falls in, wins him back with flattery, and then passes off a basking crocodile as a boat. The tiger learns not to trust blindly, and the jackal loses everyone's trust.

In a thick jungle near the Sundarbans lived a huge tiger with yellow and black stripes and a booming voice. Everyone was afraid of him except one clever jackal, who called him “Tiger Uncle”. Uncle was very strong, but not very clever.

One day the jackal found an old well near the river, right beside his new den. On the riverbank lay a mat. Grinning, the jackal spread the mat neatly over the mouth of the well. Then he ran to the tiger. “Uncle, please come to my new home today. You are my honoured guest!”

The tiger was delighted. Twirling his whiskers, he strolled over and asked, “Well, nephew, where shall I sit?” The jackal pointed to the mat. “Right here, Uncle. I've laid out a soft mat for you.” The moment the tiger sat down, splash! Down he went into the well, mat and all.

Luckily, there was not much water in the well. By the time the tiger scrambled out, dripping wet, the jackal had vanished. The tiger growled, “Just wait till I catch you!” From then on he searched for the jackal day and night. The jackal was too scared to leave his den, and his tummy rumbled with hunger.

At last the jackal went to the tiger with folded paws and a sweet smile. “Uncle, how was it my fault? The ground there was soft. When a mighty, heavy hero like you sits down, of course the ground gives way!” Hearing such praise, the tiger's anger melted away. “Hmm, that's true. I am very strong!” And uncle and nephew were friends again.

Some days later the jackal said, “Uncle, I've bought a boat. Let's go for a ride on the river.” On a sandbank a big crocodile was basking in the sun. Its rough, bumpy back looked just like a wooden boat. “There's my boat,” said the jackal. “Hop on, Uncle!”

The tiger leapt onto the crocodile's back. At once the crocodile snapped its jaws, swished its tail and dived into the river. The tiger tumbled into the water. Splashing and spluttering, he swam to the bank and ran for his life, while the jackal rolled about laughing.

From that day the tiger never listened to the jackal again. Trusting someone without thinking can lead to trouble, and quick wits really are a great strength. But those who trick their friends and family soon find that nobody believes them any more. The jackal learned that too, when no one in the jungle would accept his invitations again.

Quick wits are a great strength, but tricking others is not a virtue, and no one should trust blindly.
