Early one morning, the farmer Rahim said “Bismillah” and took his two oxen and his plough to the field. After ploughing for a long time, he sat down in the shade of a tree to rest. Suddenly a striped tiger stepped out of the bushes! With a sweet smile the tiger said, “Hello, my friend, how are you?”

Rahim’s heart was pounding, but he answered bravely, “Very well, Your Majesty. How may I serve you?” The tiger licked his lips. “I’ve come to eat your two oxen. Unhitch them from the plough, quickly.” Rahim pressed his hands together. “If my oxen are gone, how will I plough? I have a nice fat cow at home. Shall I bring her instead?” The tiger agreed and sat sharpening his claws on a stone, scritch, scratch.

His wife Jamila was surprised to see him home so early. When she heard the story, she was furious! “What? You’ll give my milking cow to a tiger? What will the children drink?” Rahim sulked. “If you’re so clever, you think of something.” Jamila tucked the end of her sari into her waist. “All right, we trust in Allah. Go back and tell the tiger the cow won’t come with you, and that I’m bringing her.”

When Rahim returned, the tiger roared, “Grrr!” Trembling, Rahim said, “Just a little longer, Your Majesty. My wife is bringing the cow.” Meanwhile, Jamila put on her husband’s huge old robe, set a winnowing tray on her head, smeared soot from the stove on her face and tied clanging pots and pans around her waist. Then she rode the neighbour’s horse to the field, clip-clop, clip-clop.

Near the field she shouted at the top of her voice, “Where’s that tiger? Yesterday I ate three tigers for breakfast! Today I need at least one, or I’ll still be hungry! Oh look, there’s one!” With the pots clanging, the tray flapping and that sooty face, the tiger nearly jumped out of his stripes. “Help! What terrible monster is this?” He tucked his tail between his legs and ran for the forest.

A sly fox had been watching from the bushes, and he ran after the tiger. When they were safe, the fox smirked. “Your Majesty, why are you running? That’s only the farmer’s wife dressed up to fool you!” The tiger was suspicious. The fox said, “If you don’t trust me, tie my tail to yours. Then I can’t run away!” The tiger liked the idea. They knotted their tails together and set off back to the field.

In the field, Rahim and Jamila were laughing their heads off. Suddenly they saw the tiger and the fox coming, tied tail to tail! Quick as a flash, Jamila had an idea. She waved and called out, “Welcome, Brother Fox, welcome! You are a true friend! Just as you promised, you’ve brought me a lovely tiger, all tied up for my breakfast!”

The tiger’s head spun. “You lying fox! You brought me here to be caught!” And he ran the other way as fast as he could. With their tails tied, the fox was dragged along behind him: over the bushes, swish; through the mud, splosh; through the thorns, ouch, ouch! “Stop, Your Majesty, stop!” But who was listening?

Only at the far end of the forest did the tiger stop. When the knot came undone, the fox flopped down: muddy, full of thorns and sore all over. But he was alive, and that was a mercy! He limped off to his den and never again poked his nose into other people’s business. As for Rahim and Jamila, they said “Alhamdulillah” and went happily home with their oxen and their cow. Not strength, but a little cleverness and courage, had won the day.
