Deep in the Sundarbans lived Halum the tiger and Leju the monkey, the best of friends. One day Halum sat under a tree looking glum. “I haven’t eaten for two days, Leju. The deer run off if a leaf so much as moves, and there are no fish in the creeks.” Leju, swinging from a branch, said, “I go to the village and eat mangoes, jackfruit and lychees. Why don’t you come too? You’ll find plenty!” Halum was a little scared, but at last he agreed.
Near the forest was a big village. Behind the Chowdhury house there were thick bushes, and next to them a stable for horses. Leju warned him, “Stay quiet in the bushes until it’s late at night.” So Halum crouched low beneath an open window.
Inside, little Rafi would not go to sleep. He just kept crying, waah, waah! His mother said, “Hush, darling, the jackal is coming!” Rafi cried louder. “The tiger is coming, he’s roaring!” Now Rafi kicked his legs as he wailed. Under the window Halum was amazed. “What a brave little human cub! He isn’t even afraid of a tiger!”
At last Ammu made her voice deep. “Then I’ll call the Hondol Kutkute! Hondol, oh Hondol!” And she growled from her throat, “Grrr-rrr-rrr!” Then she sang a little rhyme: “The Hondol Kutkute lives in the bamboo, and tweaks the ears of cry-babies too!” Rafi went silent at once. Outside, Halum’s fur stood on end. “Hondol Kutkute? I’ve never heard of it! If it’s scarier than a tiger, it must be terrible!” Shaking, he crept away into the dark beside the stable.
Just then there was an uproar at the Chowdhury house. “Thief! Thief! Catch him!” A burglar had been digging his way in and now ran for it. In the dark he saw Halum and thought a horse had wandered out of the stable. In one leap he jumped onto his back, hugged his neck, and kicked with his heels. “Go, horsey, faster!” Halum thought, “Help! The Hondol is on my back!” and ran for his life.
Before dawn the moon came up. The thief looked down and gasped. This was no horse; it was a tiger! As they passed through an orchard, he grabbed a low branch, swung off and scrambled up a huge jackfruit tree. Even with nobody on his back, Halum kept running.
Leju was in that orchard, eating lychees. When he heard Halum’s story, he laughed and laughed. “Come on, show me this Hondol of yours!” He peeped into the jackfruit tree and clapped. “Shame on you, Halum! It’s only a man!” The frightened thief squeezed into a big hollow in the trunk. Leju broke off branches, blocked the hole and sat on top. “Now where will you go?”
Inside, the thief could hardly breathe. He had a thin stick in his hand, and he poked it through a gap, right into Leju’s bottom! “Ow-ow-ow!” Leju tumbled down to the ground, rubbing his behind. “Halum, you were right! It looks like a man, but it’s really the Hondol Kutkute! It bit me with teeth as long as my hand!” Halum did not wait a second longer. “Don’t leave me, brother!” cried Leju, so Halum swung him onto his back and raced straight for the Sundarbans.
The thief peeped out of the hollow and breathed a huge sigh of relief. Just then the call to the dawn Fajr prayer floated across from a distant mosque. Something stirred in the thief’s heart. “Today Allah saved me from a tiger’s back. I will never steal again.” He repented, went home, and from the next day earned an honest living carrying baskets at the market. And in the forest, Halum and Leju still whisper to each other, “Careful! The Hondol Kutkute lives in the village!”

It is silly to fear a mere name you don’t understand, and it is never too late to turn back from wrongdoing.
