মায়ের খোঁজেIn Search of Mother

এক উঁচু গাছের ঘন সবুজ পাতার আড়ালে ছিল ছোট্ট একটি পাখির বাসা। খড়কুটো আর নরম পালক দিয়ে বোনা সেই বাসায় থাকত তিনটি ছানা। মা-পাখি কাছে এলেই তারা ঠোঁট হাঁ করে ডাকত—চিঁ চিঁ চিঁ!

High in a tall tree, hidden among thick green leaves, was a small bird’s nest. It was woven from straw and soft feathers, and three little chicks lived inside. Whenever their mother came near, they opened their beaks wide and cried, “Cheep, cheep, cheep!”

এক সকালে মা-পাখি বলল, “লক্ষ্মী হয়ে বাসায় থেকো, আমি খাবার আনতে যাচ্ছি।” তারপর ফুড়ুৎ করে উড়ে গেল। তিন ছানার মধ্যে একটি ছিল সবচেয়ে কৌতূহলী। সে বাসার কিনারে এসে উঁকি দিল—নিচে সবুজ ঝোপ, দূরে খোলা মাঠ, কত কিছু দেখার আছে!

One morning Mother Bird said, “Be good and stay in the nest. I’m going to find food.” Then, whoosh, she flew away. Of the three chicks, one was the most curious. It hopped to the edge of the nest and peeked out—green bushes below, open fields far away, so much to see!

হঠাৎ শোঁ শোঁ করে বাতাস এল। ডাল দুলে উঠল দোল-দোল। ছোট্ট ছানাটি একটু বেশিই সামনে ঝুঁকে ছিল—টুপ করে সে পড়ে গেল নিচের নরম ঝোপে। ব্যথা তেমন পেল না, কিন্তু চারদিকে শুধু পাতা আর পাতা। বাসাটা যে কোথায়, কিছুই বোঝা যায় না!

Suddenly a gust of wind came whooshing through. The branch swayed back and forth. The little chick had leaned too far forward—plop! It tumbled into the soft bushes below. It was not badly hurt, but all around there were only leaves and more leaves. Where was the nest?

“মা! মা!” কাঁপা গলায় ডাকতে লাগল সে। ছোট্ট বুকটা ধুকপুক করছে। তখন একটা হলুদ প্রজাপতি পাশে এসে উড়তে উড়তে বলল, “ভয় পেয়ো না, সোনা। ভয় পেলে পথ আরও হারিয়ে যায়।”

“Mother! Mother!” it called in a trembling voice, its tiny heart thumping. Then a yellow butterfly fluttered close and said, “Don’t be afraid, little one. When we panic, the way gets even harder to find.”

একটা কাঠবিড়ালি লেজ নাড়িয়ে তরতর করে গাছ বেয়ে নেমে এল। “তোমার বাসা ওই গাছটায়—দেখো, ওই যে মোটা গুঁড়িওয়ালা গাছ!” আর ওপর থেকে এক দোয়েল মিষ্টি শিস দিয়ে ডাল থেকে ডালে উড়ে উড়ে দেখিয়ে দিল, কোন পথে যেতে হবে।

A squirrel scampered down the trunk, flicking its tail. “Your nest is in that tree—look, the one with the thick trunk!” And from above, a magpie robin whistled sweetly and flew from branch to branch to show the way.

ছানাটি সাহস করে ডানা ঝাপটাল—ফড়ফড়, ফড়ফড়! একবার পিছলে গেল, আবার চেষ্টা করল। ঝোপ থেকে নিচু ডালে, নিচু ডাল থেকে আরেকটু উঁচুতে উঠল সে।

The chick bravely flapped its wings—flutter, flutter! It slipped once, then tried again. From the bush to a low twig, and from the low twig a little higher, it climbed.

ঠিক তখনই পাতার ফাঁক দিয়ে ভেসে এল এক চেনা ডাক। মা-পাখি খাবার নিয়ে ফিরে এসেছে! বাসায় একটি ছানা কম দেখে সে চারদিকে খুঁজতে লাগল, তারপর নিচে নেমে এসে পেয়ে গেল তার ছোট্ট সোনাকে। মা তাকে পাশে পাশে উড়িয়ে, ডালে ডালে বিশ্রাম দিয়ে, ধীরে ধীরে বাসায় ফিরিয়ে নিল। বাকি দুই ছানা খুশিতে চিঁ চিঁ করে উঠল।

Just then a familiar call floated through the leaves. Mother Bird was back with food! Seeing one chick missing, she searched all around, then swooped down and found her little one. She flew beside it, letting it rest from branch to branch, and slowly guided it home. The other two chicks cheeped with joy.

মায়ের ডানার উষ্ণ ছায়ায় বসে ছানাটি বুঝল—বিপদে ভয় লাগতেই পারে, কিন্তু আশা ছাড়তে নেই। দরকার হলে সাহায্য চাইতে হয়, চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যেতে হয়, আর মায়ের চেনা ডাকই অনেক সময় সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ পথ দেখায়।

Snug under its mother’s warm wing, the chick understood: it is all right to feel afraid, but we must not give up hope. When we need help we can ask for it, keep trying, and listen for the loving voice that guides us home.
