Fairies Come on the Flower Bus

One afternoon, a bus decorated with flower petals rings its tiny bell and stops beside a garden where children are playing, carrying little fairies. Exploring with the fairies, the children learn flower names, leave the bees in peace and water a thirsty plant. The bus leaves at sunset, but the children keep their promise to care for nature.

Soft afternoon sunshine fell across the garden. Red roses, yellow marigolds and blue butterfly-pea flowers lifted their heads one by one, as if stretching after a nap. The air smelled sweet. A group of children were playing there—one swinging high on a swing, others running about, and a girl humming a song with a red flower in her hand.

Suddenly they heard it: ting-ting, ting-ting! It sounded like the bell of a very tiny bus. Everyone stopped playing and listened. “What was that?” one of them whispered.

A wonderful bus decorated with flower petals rolled up beside the garden. Its wheels were round and yellow like marigolds, and a garland of jasmine lay on its roof. Small fairies peeked out of the windows, their wings shimmering like a butterfly’s.

One fairy smiled sweetly. “We have come from the city of colours and fragrance,” she said. “Would you like to explore the garden with us?” The children all shouted together, “Yes, yes!”

The fairies taught them the names of the flowers—this is hibiscus, that is crape jasmine, and the one smiling by the wall is the four o’clock flower. When a bee buzzed onto a blossom, one child reached out to grab it. “Stop!” said a fairy. “She is collecting nectar. Don’t bother her, and she won’t bother you.”

In one corner of the garden a little plant was drooping and dry. The children fetched a watering can and gave it a gentle shower. The fairies fluttered their wings with joy, and the plant seemed to stand a little straighter. Then one child picked up a fallen petal and said, “Beautiful things are not only for looking at. We should take care of them too.”

As the sun sank orange in the west, the fairies said goodbye. The flower bus rang its bell, ting-ting, and drove away toward the pink clouds. The children waved and called, “Please come again!”

The bus was gone, but the garden was left full of laughter, colour and a new promise: every day the children would water the plants, never pick flowers for no reason, and love the natural world.
