At the edge of a green forest lived a white donkey. He believed he was the handsomest and cleverest animal in the whole forest. One morning he climbed onto a big rock and announced at the top of his voice, “Listen, everyone! I am getting married, and mine will be the grandest wedding the forest has ever seen!”
Then the dressing-up began. He put on a red sherwani, wound a bright red-and-yellow turban around his head, and hung a marigold garland round his neck. All day he paraded from one end of the forest to the other, calling, “Look, look! Doesn’t the groom look wonderful?”
The striped zebra smiled. “Your outfit is splendid. But where will the guests sit? Sort that out first.” The donkey twitched his ears. “Oh, that can wait!”
The deer asked, “And what about the food? So many guests are coming!” The rabbit raised both ears and asked quietly, “Have you even spoken to the one you hope to marry?” But the donkey would not listen to anyone. He kept straightening his turban as he admired his reflection in the pond. “Who could ever say no to a groom like me?”
On the day of the celebration, animals and birds came in crowds. A squirrel peeped down from a branch, and a hawk circled in the sky. But there was nowhere to sit, and everyone stood about, pushing and shoving. The cooking pots were empty, and tummies rumbled with hunger.
Worst of all, when someone asked around, it turned out that the one the donkey meant to marry knew nothing about this wedding! No one had asked her at all. Everyone stared at one another in surprise. The donkey stood with drooping ears and lowered head, and even his grand turban seemed to tilt sadly to one side.
At last the donkey went slowly to his friends. “Please forgive me,” he said. “I was so busy with my outfit that I didn’t listen to a single word you said.”
His friends helped him understand that important plans need more than decorations. You have to think ahead, ask for the agreement of the others involved, take responsibility—and listen carefully to what others say. The donkey nodded and promised that from now on he would do just that.

Pride and refusing to listen to others lead to embarrassment and trouble.
