A thorn gives little Tuntuni a painful boil, but the proud barber refuses to help and the King just laughs. The mouse, cat, stick, fire, sea and elephant all turn her away, until a tiny mosquito agrees to help. When the mosquito swarm arrives, everyone gives in down the line, and the barber says sorry and treats her boil.

In the corner of a courtyard there was a little patch of aubergine plants. Every morning tiny Tuntuni the tailorbird sat on an aubergine leaf and danced: tun, tun, tun, hop, hop! One day, while she was dancing, a thorn under the leaf pricked her. A few days later a big, painful boil came up on the spot. It throbbed so much that she could hardly fly, let alone dance.

Everyone told her, “Go to the barber. He can open it gently with his sharp razor and it will heal.” So off she flew to the barber’s shop. “Barber Bhai, Barber Bhai, will you open my boil, please?” The barber put his nose in the air. “Hmph! I shave the King himself. Do you think I’ll waste my time on a tiny bird? Shoo!”

Tuntuni felt hurt, but she did not give up. She flew straight to the palace. “Your Majesty, your barber won’t help me. Please tell him to!” The King laughed so hard he rolled about on his cushions. “A bird with a boil!” he chuckled, and forgot all about it.

So Tuntuni went to the mouse’s hole. The mouse was delighted. “Sister Tuni! Come in, sit down, have some puffed rice and molasses!” Tuntuni said, “I will, if you nibble a hole in the King’s velvet pillow.” The mouse bit his tongue. “The King’s pillow? Oh no, I couldn’t!”

She went to the cat: “Chase that mouse, please!” The cat yawned. “It’s my nap time.” She went to the stick: “Give that cat a little poke!” The stick said, “What has the cat ever done to me?” She went to the fire: “Singe that stick!” The fire said, “I’m tired today.” She went to the sea: “Put out that fire!” The sea rolled a wave and said, “No.” She went to the elephant: “Drink up the sea!” The elephant flapped his ears. “All that water? My tummy would burst!”

Everyone had turned her away. At last Tuntuni went to the little mosquito. The mosquito called out from far off, “Is that Sister Tuni? Come, come! What can I do for you?” Tuntuni said, “Would you give that elephant a little bite?” The mosquito puffed out his chest. “Easy! Let’s see how thick his skin really is!”

The mosquito called every mosquito in the land. Pin-pin-pin-pin! Out they flew in great swarms. The sky went dark and their wings stirred up a whooshing wind. At that sound everyone jumped! The elephant cried, “Stop, stop, I’ll drink the sea!” The sea cried, “I’ll put out the fire!” The fire cried, “I’ll singe the stick!” The stick cried, “I’ll poke the cat!” The cat cried, “I’ll chase the mouse!” The mouse cried, “I’ll nibble the King’s pillow!” And the King leapt up and shouted, “Somebody fetch my barber, this minute!”

The barber came running, out of breath, and pressed his palms together. “Forgive me, Sister Tuni, I was wrong. Come, let me see to your boil.” Then, saying “Bismillah”, he opened it very carefully and gently, and rubbed on some soothing ointment.

In a few days the pain was gone. Alhamdulillah! Tuntuni sat on her aubergine leaf again and sang her happy song: tuntuna tun tun tun, hop, hop! And from that day on, the barber remembered never to look down on anyone just because they are small.
