Every afternoon on the way home from school, Ami saw an ice-cream cart at the corner of the road. It was painted red and white, with a smiling sun on its side. The seller had a thick moustache and a checked gamchha over his shoulder. He rang his bell—ting-tang, ting-tang—and called out cheerfully, “Cold ice cream! Yummy ice cream!”
At the sound of the bell, children from the neighbourhood came running. An old grandfather in glasses came every day with his grandchild in his arms. One day Ami stood beside the cart and asked, “You stand in the sun all day talking to so many people. Don’t you get tired?”
The seller wiped his forehead with his gamchha and smiled. “Of course I get tired. But the work is a joy too. Some children learn to count their coins with me, some buy ice cream for a little brother or sister, and some just stop by for a chat. Seeing all that fills my heart.”
That day Ami stayed a while and watched. The seller spoke politely to every customer—respectfully to grown-ups, kindly to children. He counted the money carefully and gave back the right change. Every so often he wiped the cart with a damp cloth to keep it sparkling clean.
Suddenly a coin slipped from a little boy’s hand—ting!—and rolled under the cart’s wheel. The boy stood there, about to cry. Ami bent down at once, picked up the coin and put it back in his hand. The boy beamed, and the seller winked. “Well done! You’re a good friend.”
Then Ami bought an orange ice cream. Licking it on the walk home, Ami thought about all the familiar people on that road—the rickshaw puller, the tea-stall owner, the hawkers—and how each of them had their own story and their own hard work. Ami had never really thought about it that way before.
That day Ami learned that honest work deserves respect, and that a little politeness can turn a stranger into a friend. From the next day on, whenever the bell went ting-tang, Ami would wave and call out, “Good afternoon, Ice-cream Uncle!”
