অনেক অনেক কাল আগের কথা। তখনো পৃথিবীতে কোনো মানুষ ছিল না। ছিল পাহাড়, নদী, সাগর আর খোলা আকাশ। একদিন আল্লাহ তায়ালা ফেরেশতাদের জানালেন, “আমি পৃথিবীতে একজন খলিফা, অর্থাৎ প্রতিনিধি পাঠাতে চাই।”
Long, long ago there were no people on the earth. There were mountains, rivers, seas and the open sky. One day Allah told the angels, “I am going to place a khalifa, a successor, on the earth.”
ফেরেশতারা বিনয়ের সঙ্গে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, “আপনি কি সেখানে এমন কাউকে পাঠাবেন, যে অশান্তি সৃষ্টি করবে আর রক্তপাত ঘটাবে? আমরা তো সবসময় আপনার প্রশংসা ও পবিত্রতা ঘোষণা করি।” আল্লাহ বললেন, “আমি যা জানি, তোমরা তা জানো না।”
The angels asked humbly, “Will You place there someone who will spread mischief and shed blood, while we always praise You and declare Your holiness?” Allah said, “I know what you do not know.”
তারপর আল্লাহ মাটি দিয়ে আদম (আ.)-কে সৃষ্টি করলেন, সুন্দর আকৃতি দিলেন এবং তাঁর মধ্যে রুহ ফুঁকে দিলেন। আল্লাহ আদম (আ.)-কে সব জিনিসের নাম শিখিয়ে দিলেন। এরপর সেগুলো ফেরেশতাদের সামনে এনে বললেন, “এগুলোর নাম বলো তো।” ফেরেশতারা বললেন, “আপনি পবিত্র! আপনি আমাদের যা শিখিয়েছেন, তার বাইরে আমরা কিছুই জানি না।” তখন আদম (আ.) একে একে সব নাম বলে দিলেন। ফেরেশতারা দেখলেন, আল্লাহ মানুষকে জ্ঞানের কত বড় সম্মান দিয়েছেন।
Then Allah created Adam (peace be upon him) from clay, gave him a fine form and breathed the spirit into him. Allah taught Adam the names of all things. Then He showed those things to the angels and said, “Tell Me their names.” The angels said, “Glory be to You! We know nothing except what You have taught us.” Then Adam told all the names, one by one. The angels saw what a great honour of knowledge Allah had given to humankind.
আল্লাহ ফেরেশতাদের আদেশ দিলেন আদম (আ.)-কে সিজদা করতে। সবাই আদেশ মানলেন, শুধু ইবলিস মানল না। ইবলিস ছিল জিনদের একজন। আল্লাহ জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, “তোমাকে কিসে বাধা দিল?” সে অহংকার করে বলল, “আমি ওর চেয়ে ভালো। আপনি আমাকে আগুন থেকে আর ওকে মাটি থেকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন।” এই অহংকারের কারণে ইবলিসকে সেখান থেকে বের করে দেওয়া হলো। যাওয়ার সময় সে বলে গেল, কিয়ামত পর্যন্ত সে মানুষকে সঠিক পথ থেকে সরাতে চেষ্টা করবে।
Allah commanded the angels to bow down before Adam. They all obeyed except Iblis, who was one of the jinn. Allah asked, “What stopped you?” Iblis answered proudly, “I am better than him. You created me from fire and him from clay.” Because of this arrogance Iblis was sent away. As he left, he said that until the Day of Judgement he would try to lead people away from the right path.
আল্লাহ আদম (আ.) ও তাঁর স্ত্রীকে জান্নাতে থাকতে দিলেন। সেখানে ক্ষুধা নেই, তৃষ্ণা নেই, রোদের তাপ নেই। আল্লাহ বললেন, “এখানে যা খুশি, যেখান থেকে খুশি তৃপ্তির সঙ্গে খাও। শুধু এই গাছটির কাছে যেয়ো না।” তিনি সাবধানও করে দিলেন, “ইবলিস তোমাদের শত্রু। সে যেন তোমাদের জান্নাত থেকে বের করে না দেয়।”
Allah let Adam and his wife live in the Garden of Paradise, where there was no hunger, no thirst and no burning sun. Allah said, “Eat freely of whatever you like, wherever you like, but do not go near this tree.” He also warned them, “Iblis is your enemy. Do not let him drive you out of the Garden.”
কিন্তু শয়তান চুপিচুপি কুমন্ত্রণা দিতে লাগল। সে বলল, “আমি কি তোমাদের এমন গাছের কথা বলব, যা চিরজীবন আর অক্ষয় রাজত্ব এনে দেয়?” সে কসম খেয়ে বলল, সে তাঁদের ভালোই চায়। আদম (আ.) আল্লাহর নিষেধের কথা ভুলে গেলেন। তাঁরা দুজন সেই গাছের ফল খেয়ে ফেললেন। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তাঁদের পোশাক সরে গেল, আর তাঁরা লজ্জায় জান্নাতের গাছের পাতা দিয়ে নিজেদের ঢাকতে লাগলেন।
But Shaytan began to whisper to them. He said, “Shall I show you the tree of everlasting life and a kingdom that never fades?” He swore that he only wanted good for them. Adam forgot Allah's command, and the two of them ate from that tree. At once their clothing fell away, and in shame they began to cover themselves with leaves from the Garden.
আদম (আ.) ও তাঁর স্ত্রী নিজেদের ভুল বুঝতে পারলেন। তাঁরা ইবলিসের মতো অহংকার করলেন না, অজুহাতও দিলেন না। বরং কাতর হয়ে দোয়া করলেন, “হে আমাদের রব, আমরা নিজেদের ওপর জুলুম করেছি। আপনি যদি আমাদের ক্ষমা না করেন ও দয়া না করেন, তাহলে আমরা অবশ্যই ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হব।” আল্লাহ তাঁদের তওবা কবুল করলেন। তিনি তো তওবা কবুলকারী, পরম দয়ালু।
Adam and his wife understood their mistake. They did not act proudly like Iblis, and they made no excuses. Instead they prayed with all their hearts, “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.” Allah accepted their repentance. He is the One who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.
এরপর আল্লাহ তাঁদের পৃথিবীতে পাঠালেন। বললেন, “সেখানে তোমাদের জন্য কিছুকালের বাসস্থান ও জীবনের উপকরণ রয়েছে। আমার পক্ষ থেকে তোমাদের কাছে পথনির্দেশ আসবে। যারা তা মেনে চলবে, তাদের কোনো ভয় নেই, তারা দুঃখও পাবে না।” আল্লাহ আদম (আ.)-কে মনোনীত করলেন এবং সঠিক পথ দেখালেন।
Then Allah sent them down to the earth and said, “There you will have a place to live and the things you need for a time. Guidance will come to you from Me. Whoever follows My guidance will have no fear and will not grieve.” Allah chose Adam and guided him.
এভাবে পৃথিবীতে শুরু হলো মানুষের জীবন—দায়িত্ব আর আল্লাহর হিদায়াতের আলো নিয়ে। ইবলিস অহংকার করে হেরে গেল, আর আদম (আ.) ভুলের পর মাথা নত করে ক্ষমা চেয়ে আল্লাহর ভালোবাসা পেলেন। আমরাও ভুল করলে লজ্জা না পেয়ে আল্লাহর কাছে ক্ষমা চাইব, আর অহংকার থেকে দূরে থাকব।
So human life on earth began, with responsibility and the light of Allah's guidance. Iblis lost because of his pride, while Adam, after his mistake, bowed his head, asked forgiveness and received Allah's mercy. When we make mistakes, we too should turn to Allah and ask forgiveness, and stay far away from pride.
