Yaqub (peace be upon him) was the son of Ishaq and the grandson of Ibrahim (peace be upon them). Allah had given Ibrahim the good news of Ishaq, and after him, of Yaqub. Allah made Yaqub a prophet too. He had twelve sons, and among them Yusuf and his younger brother were especially dear to him.
One day young Yusuf came and said, “Father, I saw in a dream eleven stars, the sun and the moon bowing down to me.” Yaqub understood that this was a sign of Allah's special favour. He said tenderly, “My son, do not tell your dream to your brothers, or they may plot against you. Shaytan is a clear enemy to people.”
Even so, jealousy grew in the hearts of the older brothers. They came to their father and said, “Send Yusuf with us tomorrow. He can play, and we will look after him.” Yaqub said, “It saddens me that you would take him, and I fear a wolf may eat him while you are not paying attention.” The brothers insisted, “How could that happen with so many of us there?”
In the evening they came back weeping. “Father, we were racing each other and left Yusuf with our things, and a wolf came...” They had brought Yusuf's shirt stained with false blood. Yaqub knew this was not true. He said, “No, your souls have made something seem right to you. So patience is most fitting, beautiful patience. And Allah is the One whose help I seek against what you describe.”
Years passed, and a famine came to the land. The brothers went to Egypt to buy food. When they wanted to take their youngest brother on the next journey, Yaqub made them promise in Allah's name to bring him back, and advised them, “Do not all enter by one gate; enter by different gates. But I cannot protect you against anything Allah wills. In Him I put my trust.”
In Egypt, something happened that meant the youngest brother had to stay behind. When Yaqub heard, he said again, “Patience is most fitting. Perhaps Allah will bring them all back to me together.” He wept for Yusuf until his eyes turned white with grief. Yet he complained to no one. He said, “I only complain of my sorrow and grief to Allah, and I know from Allah what you do not know.”
He told his sons, “Go and search for Yusuf and his brother. Do not lose hope in Allah's mercy.” This time in Egypt the brothers discovered that the honoured minister of Egypt was their lost brother Yusuf! Yusuf forgave them and gave them his shirt, saying, “Place this over my father's face, and he will see again.”
As soon as the caravan left Egypt, far away Yaqub said, “I can smell the scent of Yusuf!” When the bearer of good news laid the shirt over his face, his sight came back. His sons, ashamed, asked for forgiveness. Yaqub said, “I will ask my Lord to forgive you. He is the Forgiving, the Most Merciful.” Later the whole family went to Egypt and was reunited with Yusuf, and the dream of long ago came true.
Near the end of his life Yaqub gathered his sons and asked, “What will you worship after me?” They said, “We will worship your God, the God of your forefathers Ibrahim, Ismail and Ishaq, the One God, and to Him we submit.” Through all his sorrow he never gave up hope. In hard times, patience and trust in Allah are our greatest strength.
