Madyan was a busy trading town. Caravans came from far and wide. The market was lined with shops: sacks of wheat, baskets of dates, the smell of spices, and in the middle, brass scales swinging with a clink and a clank. But a great wrong was hidden in that market. Many traders took full measure when they bought, but gave short measure when they sold. Buyers never even noticed how much was missing from their baskets. The people of Madyan also worshipped others besides Allah.
Allah sent them their brother Shuayb (peace be upon him) as a prophet. He said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no god but Him. Give full measure and full weight. Do not cheat people of what is theirs. Do not spread corruption in the land after it has been set right.”
He also said, “Do not sit on every road threatening people, and do not block those who want to follow Allah's way. Remember how you were few and Allah made you many. I see that you are well off. What remains to you honestly is better for you.”
The people mocked him. “Shuayb, does your prayer tell you that we should abandon what our forefathers worshipped, or stop doing whatever we like with our own wealth?” Shuayb replied calmly, “I only want to set things right as far as I can. My success comes only from Allah. In Him I trust, and to Him I turn.”
He warned them too: “Do not let your opposition to me bring upon you what befell the people of Nuh, Hud and Salih. And the people of Lut are not far from you. Ask your Lord's forgiveness and turn back to Him. My Lord is Most Merciful, Most Loving.”
But they said, “We don't understand much of what you say, and we see that you are weak among us. If it weren't for your family, we would have stoned you and driven you out.” Shuayb said, “O my people, is my family more honoured in your eyes than Allah?” The arrogant chiefs threatened, “Either you and your believing followers return to our religion, or we will drive you out of our town.”
Shuayb and the believers did not turn away from the truth. He prayed, “Our Lord, judge between us and our people with truth. You are the best of judges.” Then Allah's command came. A mighty blast and an earthquake seized the defiant ones, and by His mercy Allah saved Shuayb and the believers with him.
The market where the scales had once swung fell silent. Shuayb said sadly, “O my people, I delivered to you the message of my Lord and wished you well.”
The story of Shuayb (peace be upon him) reminds us that honesty belongs not only in the mosque but also in the market. In shops, in games, in exams and when sharing with friends, Allah loves those who give fair measure and cheat no one.
