ইউনুস (আ.) ছিলেন আল্লাহর একজন রাসুল। আল্লাহ তাঁকে পাঠিয়েছিলেন এক বিশাল জনপদে—এক লাখ বা তারও বেশি মানুষের কাছে। তিনি তাদের এক আল্লাহর দিকে ডাকলেন, ভালো পথে চলতে বললেন। কিন্তু অনেক দিন ধরে বোঝানোর পরও লোকেরা তাঁর কথা শুনল না।
Yunus (peace be upon him) was a messenger of Allah. Allah sent him to a large community of a hundred thousand people or more. He called them to the One God and to the right path. But even after a long time of trying, the people would not listen.
একসময় ইউনুস (আ.) রাগ করে তাঁর জাতিকে ছেড়ে চলে গেলেন। তিনি ভেবেছিলেন, এতে তাঁকে কোনো কষ্টে পড়তে হবে না। তিনি গিয়ে উঠলেন যাত্রী আর মালপত্রে বোঝাই একটি নৌকায়। চারদিকে শুধু নীল জল, ঢেউয়ের ছলাৎ-ছলাৎ শব্দ।
At last Yunus left his people in anger. He thought that no hardship would come to him because of it. He boarded a boat heavily loaded with passengers and goods. All around was blue water and the splash of waves.
নৌকায় একসময় লটারি করা হলো, আর তাতে নাম উঠল ইউনুস (আ.)-এর। তিনি পড়লেন সমুদ্রের জলে। তখন আল্লাহর আদেশে এক বিশাল মাছ তাঁকে গিলে ফেলল। ইউনুস (আ.) বুঝতে পারলেন, আল্লাহর অনুমতির অপেক্ষা না করে জাতিকে ছেড়ে আসা তাঁর ঠিক হয়নি।
On the boat lots were drawn, and the lot fell on Yunus. He went into the sea, and by Allah's command a huge fish swallowed him. Yunus understood that he should not have left his people without waiting for Allah's permission.
মাছের পেটের ভেতর ঘুটঘুটে অন্ধকার। তার ওপর সমুদ্রের গভীর অন্ধকার, আর রাতের অন্ধকার। সেই অন্ধকারের মধ্যে ইউনুস (আ.) আল্লাহকে ডাকলেন, “লা ইলাহা ইল্লা আনতা, সুবহানাকা, ইন্নি কুনতু মিনাজ জালিমিন।” অর্থাৎ, “তুমি ছাড়া কোনো উপাস্য নেই, তুমি পবিত্র, নিশ্চয়ই আমি ছিলাম অন্যায়কারীদের একজন।”
Inside the fish it was pitch dark, with the darkness of the deep sea and the darkness of night around it. In that darkness Yunus called upon Allah: “La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.” That means: “There is no god but You. Glory be to You! I was indeed among the wrongdoers.”
আল্লাহ তাঁর ডাকে সাড়া দিলেন এবং তাঁকে সেই দুশ্চিন্তা থেকে মুক্ত করলেন। কুরআনে আল্লাহ বলেছেন, ইউনুস (আ.) যদি আল্লাহর পবিত্রতা ঘোষণাকারীদের একজন না হতেন, তাহলে কিয়ামত পর্যন্ত মাছের পেটেই থেকে যেতেন। আর আল্লাহ এটাও বলেছেন, “এভাবেই আমি মুমিনদের উদ্ধার করি।”
Allah answered his call and rescued him from his distress. In the Qur'an Allah says that if Yunus had not been one of those who glorified Allah, he would have stayed inside the fish until the Day of Resurrection. And Allah also says, “That is how We save the believers.”
আল্লাহর আদেশে মাছটি তাঁকে এক খোলা, ফাঁকা তীরে ফেলে দিল। তিনি তখন খুব দুর্বল আর অসুস্থ। দয়াময় আল্লাহ তাঁর ওপর একটি লাউজাতীয় লতাগাছ জন্মিয়ে দিলেন। গাছের বড় বড় সবুজ পাতা তাঁকে ছায়া দিল, আর ধীরে ধীরে তিনি সুস্থ হয়ে উঠলেন।
By Allah's command the fish cast him out onto an open, bare shore. He was weak and unwell. The Merciful Lord made a gourd vine grow over him. Its big green leaves gave him shade, and slowly he grew strong again.
এরপর আল্লাহ তাঁকে আবার সেই এক লাখ বা তারও বেশি মানুষের কাছে পাঠালেন। এবার তারা ঈমান আনল। কুরআনে আছে, ইউনুস (আ.)-এর জাতি যখন ঈমান আনল, আল্লাহ তাদের ওপর থেকে লাঞ্ছনার শাস্তি সরিয়ে নিলেন এবং কিছুকাল তাদের সুখে-শান্তিতে থাকতে দিলেন।
Then Allah sent him back to those hundred thousand people or more, and this time they believed. The Qur'an tells us that when the people of Yunus believed, Allah lifted from them a humiliating punishment and let them enjoy life for a while.
আল্লাহ ইউনুস (আ.)-কে বেছে নিয়েছিলেন এবং তাঁকে সৎকর্মশীলদের অন্তর্ভুক্ত করেছিলেন। সহিহ হাদিসে নবীজি ﷺ বলেছেন, কেউ যেন না বলে যে সে ইউনুস ইবনে মাত্তার চেয়ে উত্তম। অর্থাৎ ইউনুস (আ.) ছিলেন অনেক সম্মানিত নবী।
Allah chose Yunus and made him one of the righteous. In an authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said that no one should say he is better than Yunus son of Matta. Yunus was a greatly honoured prophet.
অন্ধকারে, বিপদে, মন খারাপের সময় আমরাও ইউনুস (আ.)-এর মতো আল্লাহকে ডাকতে পারি। নিজের ভুল স্বীকার করে আন্তরিকভাবে তওবা করলে আল্লাহ শোনেন, আর সবচেয়ে গভীর অন্ধকার থেকেও আলোর পথ দেখান।
In darkness, in danger and when we feel sad, we too can call upon Allah as Yunus did. When we admit our mistakes and sincerely repent, Allah hears us and shows us the way to light, even from the deepest darkness.
