Once the Children of Israel asked their prophet for a king under whom they could strive in Allah's way. Allah chose Talut as their king. As Talut's army set out, they came to a river. Talut said, “Allah will test you with this river. Whoever drinks no more than a handful will stay with me.” Almost everyone drank their fill, except a few.
The few patient soldiers went forward to face Jalut, the leader of a huge army. They said, “How many a small group has overcome a large group, by Allah's permission! Allah is with the patient.” They prayed, “Our Lord, pour patience upon us and keep our feet firm.” Among that small group was Dawud (peace be upon him). By Allah's permission they won, and Jalut fell at the hands of Dawud.
Then Allah gave Dawud kingship and wisdom and taught him whatever He willed. He made him a prophet and gave him the scripture called the Zabur. Dawud was strong, and he always turned back to Allah.
When Dawud glorified Allah, by Allah's command even the mountains glorified Allah with him, morning and evening. The birds gathered in flocks, and all of them praised Allah together. Imagine the songs of the mountains and the birds blending in the light of dawn!
Allah made iron soft for Dawud. He taught him how to link rings in the right measure to make coats of mail that protect people in battle. In an authentic hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said that Dawud ate only from what he earned with his own hands. Even as a king, he worked for his food.
He worshipped Allah a great deal. A hadith tells us that the fasting most beloved to Allah is the fasting of Dawud: he fasted one day and not the next. And the prayer most beloved to Allah is his prayer: he slept half the night, prayed for a third of it, and then slept for a sixth.
One day Dawud was in his place of worship when suddenly two men climbed over the wall and came in. He was startled. They said, “Do not be afraid. We are two sides of a dispute and want a fair judgement. This is my brother. He has ninety-nine sheep and I have only one, yet he says, ‘Give that one to me too,’ and he overpowers me with his words.” Dawud said, “He has wronged you by asking to add your sheep to his flock.”
At once Dawud understood that this had been a test for him from Allah. He asked his Lord for forgiveness, fell down in prostration and turned back to Allah, and Allah forgave him. Allah said, “O Dawud, We have made you a successor on the earth, so judge between people with justice and do not follow your own desires.”
Allah told the family of Dawud, “Work with gratitude. Few of My servants are truly grateful.” The life of Dawud teaches us that trusting Allah brings courage even to the small, that power must never lead us away from justice, and that working with our own hands and staying grateful is true honour.
