আদ জাতির পরে পৃথিবীতে এসেছিল সামূদ জাতি। আল্লাহ তাদের দিয়েছিলেন অনেক নিয়ামত—সবুজ বাগান, ঝরনার জল, ফসলের খেত আর খেজুরগাছ, যার থোকা ভারে নুয়ে পড়ত। তারা ছিল খুব দক্ষ। সমতলে বানাত বড় বড় প্রাসাদ, আর পাহাড় কেটে তৈরি করত মজবুত ঘর। কিন্তু এত নিয়ামত পেয়েও তারা আল্লাহকে ভুলে মূর্তির পূজা করত, আর অহংকারে মেতে থাকত।
After the people of 'Ad came the people of Thamud. Allah gave them many blessings: green gardens, flowing springs, fields of crops and date palms heavy with fruit. They were very skilled. On the plains they built great palaces, and they carved strong homes out of the mountains. Yet with all these blessings they forgot Allah, worshipped idols and grew proud.
আল্লাহ তাদেরই মধ্য থেকে একজনকে নবী করে পাঠালেন—সালেহ (আ.)। তিনি ভালোবেসে বললেন, “হে আমার জাতি, আল্লাহর ইবাদত করো। তিনি ছাড়া তোমাদের আর কোনো উপাস্য নেই। তিনিই তোমাদের মাটি থেকে সৃষ্টি করেছেন এবং এখানে বসবাস করতে দিয়েছেন। তাঁর কাছে ক্ষমা চাও, তাঁর দিকে ফিরে এসো। আমার রব নিকটে আছেন, তিনি ডাকে সাড়া দেন।”
Allah sent them a prophet from among themselves: Salih (peace be upon him). Lovingly he said, “O my people, worship Allah. You have no god but Him. He created you from the earth and let you live upon it. Ask His forgiveness and turn back to Him. My Lord is near, and He answers.”
লোকেরা অবাক হয়ে বলল, “সালেহ, এর আগে তো তোমাকে নিয়ে আমাদের অনেক আশা ছিল! আমাদের বাপ-দাদারা যার পূজা করত, তুমি কি তা ছাড়তে বলছ?” কেউ কেউ বলল, “তুমি তো আমাদের মতোই একজন মানুষ। সত্যি নবী হলে একটা নিদর্শন দেখাও।”
The people were astonished. “Salih, we had such high hopes for you before this! Are you telling us to abandon what our forefathers worshipped?” Some said, “You are only a man like us. If you are truly a prophet, bring us a sign.”
আল্লাহ তাদের জন্য নিদর্শন হিসেবে পাঠালেন একটি উটনী। সালেহ (আ.) বললেন, “এটি আল্লাহর উটনী, তোমাদের জন্য একটি নিদর্শন। একে আল্লাহর জমিনে চরে খেতে দাও। কোনো খারাপ উদ্দেশ্যে একে স্পর্শ কোরো না, নইলে কঠিন শাস্তি তোমাদের পাকড়াও করবে।” তিনি আরও বললেন, পানির কূপ থেকে একদিন উটনী পান করবে, আর আরেকদিন পান করবে তারা—পালা করে।
Allah sent them a she-camel as a sign. Salih said, “This is the she-camel of Allah, a sign for you. Let her graze freely on Allah's earth and do not touch her with harm, or a painful punishment will seize you.” He also told them that the water would be shared in turns: one day for the she-camel to drink, and another day for them.
সামূদের মধ্যে কিছু দুর্বল ও সাধারণ মানুষ সালেহ (আ.)-এর কথায় ঈমান আনল। কিন্তু অহংকারী নেতারা বলল, “তোমরা যাতে বিশ্বাস করেছ, আমরা তা মানি না।” শহরে ছিল নয়জন লোক, যারা শুধু অশান্তি ছড়াত। তারা গোপনে ষড়যন্ত্র করল, কীভাবে সালেহ (আ.) ও তাঁর পরিবারকে রাতের বেলা আক্রমণ করা যায়। কিন্তু তারা চক্রান্ত করল, আর আল্লাহও কৌশল করলেন; তারা তা টেরও পেল না।
Some of the weak and ordinary people of Thamud believed in Salih. But the arrogant chiefs said, “We reject what you believe in.” In the city were nine men who did nothing but spread mischief. They secretly plotted to attack Salih and his family by night. They plotted, but Allah also planned, and they did not even realise it.
শেষে তারা তাদের সবচেয়ে হতভাগা লোকটিকে ডাকল। সে সাহস দেখিয়ে আল্লাহর আদেশ অমান্য করে উটনীটিকে মেরে ফেলল। তারপর তারা দম্ভ করে বলল, “সালেহ, তুমি যে শাস্তির ভয় দেখাও, পারলে তা নিয়ে এসো!”
In the end they called the most wretched of their men. He dared to defy Allah's command and killed the she-camel. Then they boasted, “Salih, bring us the punishment you threaten us with, if you can!”
সালেহ (আ.) দুঃখভরা কণ্ঠে বললেন, “তোমরা আর মাত্র তিন দিন নিজেদের ঘরে ভোগ করে নাও। এটি এমন প্রতিশ্রুতি, যা মিথ্যা হবার নয়।” তিন দিন পর আল্লাহর আদেশ এল। এক প্রচণ্ড আওয়াজ আর ভূমিকম্প অবাধ্যদের পাকড়াও করল। যে সুন্দর ঘরবাড়ি নিয়ে তারা গর্ব করত, সেগুলো এমনভাবে শূন্য পড়ে রইল, যেন সেখানে কেউ কখনো বাস করেনি।
With sorrow Salih said, “Enjoy yourselves in your homes for just three more days. This is a promise that will not prove false.” After three days Allah's command came. A mighty blast and an earthquake seized the defiant ones. The fine houses they had been so proud of stood empty, as if no one had ever lived there.
আল্লাহ তাঁর রহমতে সালেহ (আ.) ও ঈমানদারদের রক্ষা করলেন। সালেহ (আ.) সেই নীরব জনপদ থেকে মুখ ফিরিয়ে বললেন, “হে আমার জাতি, আমি তো তোমাদের কাছে আমার রবের বাণী পৌঁছে দিয়েছিলাম, তোমাদের মঙ্গল চেয়েছিলাম। কিন্তু তোমরা উপদেশদাতাদের পছন্দ করো না।”
By His mercy, Allah saved Salih and the believers. Salih turned away from the silent town and said, “O my people, I delivered to you the message of my Lord and wished you well, but you do not like those who give sincere advice.”
পাহাড় কেটে বানানো সেই ঘরগুলো আজও মানুষকে মনে করিয়ে দেয়—শক্তি, দক্ষতা আর সম্পদ মানুষকে রক্ষা করতে পারে না, যদি সে আল্লাহর নিদর্শন আর আদেশকে অবহেলা করে। আল্লাহর কথা মানা আর ভালো উপদেশ শোনার মধ্যেই সত্যিকারের নিরাপত্তা।
Those houses carved into the mountains still remind people that strength, skill and wealth cannot protect anyone who ignores Allah's signs and commands. True safety lies in obeying Allah and listening to good advice.
