Long, long ago, a group of young people lived in a city where most people had forgotten Allah and worshipped false gods. But these young people believed with all their hearts that the heavens and the earth have only one Lord: Allah. Allah increased them in guidance and made their hearts strong.
They said, “Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. We will never call upon anyone besides Him.” Yet holding on to their faith grew harder every day. Rather than give in to what was wrong, they decided to leave and look for a safe place. Their dog came along too, wagging its tail like a loyal friend.
Climbing a hilly path, pebbles crunching under their feet, they reached the mouth of a cave. Inside were cool air and quiet shadows. There they took shelter, raised their hands, and prayed, “Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself, and guide us rightly in our affair.”
Tired from the journey, they fell asleep. But this was no ordinary sleep: Allah kept them sleeping for many years. In the morning the sunlight slipped past the right side of the cave, and in the evening it brushed past the left, while they lay safely in the open space inside. Allah turned them over, now to the right, now to the left. And at the entrance lay their dog, its front legs stretched out, as if keeping watch.
Years went by. Outside, rain poured and pattered, the sun blazed, and wildflowers bloomed and faded around the cave. Then one day, by Allah’s will, they woke up. Rubbing his eyes, one of them asked, “How long have we slept?” Someone answered, “Perhaps a day, or part of a day.” At last they all said, “Our Lord knows best how long we stayed.”
Their stomachs were rumbling. They gave one of them a few silver coins and said, “Go to the city. Find where the purest food is sold and bring some back. Be careful and gentle, so that no one learns about us.”
When he entered the city, he was amazed. The streets, the houses, even people’s clothes all looked unfamiliar. At a shop he held out his coin, and the shopkeeper stared with wide eyes. Coins like this had been used ages ago! People gathered around, and the whispering began.
Slowly it became clear how very long they had slept. Allah made their story known to the people, so that everyone would understand that Allah’s promise is true and that the Last Day will surely come. People still argue about how many they were and exactly how many years they slept; the Qur’an reminds us that Allah knows best.
Standing up for the truth takes courage, good friends are a great blessing, and trusting Allah is what keeps us steady when times are hard.
