In a village there lived an honest garden owner. Juicy fruit hung from every tree in his garden, and a sweet smell filled the air. At harvest time he never forgot the poor. People in need came with baskets, and he gladly gave everyone a share. Even the birds in the garden seemed to sing more on those days.
His sons had grown up watching all this. But after their father died, they made a different decision. One evening they sat together and said, “Father used to give so much away. Our family is large. If we share like that, what will be left for us?”
They swore, “Tomorrow, very early, we will pick all the fruit. If we finish before anyone knows, we won’t have to give anything away.” They made their plan with great confidence, but not once did they say “In sha Allah”, if Allah wills. They did not remember Allah’s will, and they forgot the right of the poor.
While they slept, in the darkness of the night, a calamity from Allah came upon the garden. Before morning, the green garden had turned black and bare, as if everything had been cut away.
At dawn they called to one another, “Come on, if we want to pick the fruit we must leave now!” As they crept along, they whispered, “Careful! Don’t let a single poor person into the garden today.” They thought their plan was perfect.
But when they reached the garden, they stopped short. At first they did not even recognize the place. One said, “We must have lost our way!” Then they realized, “No, this is our garden. We are the ones who have been deprived.” The most fair-minded of them said, “Didn’t I tell you? Why don’t you glorify Allah?”
Then they understood that their greed had been a terrible mistake. They said, “Glory be to our Lord! We were the wrongdoers.” At first they turned on one another, blaming each other: “This happened because of you!” But in the end they all admitted their mistake and said, “Woe to us, we truly went too far.” They repented and hoped, “Perhaps our Lord will give us something better in its place. We turn to our Lord in hope.”
Blessings come with responsibility. The fear that sharing will leave us with less can make a heart stingy. But a grateful heart knows that remembering others’ needs makes our own character richer, and that when we do wrong, the door back to Allah is always open.
