মুসা (আ.)-এর সময়ের কথা। তাঁর নিজের সম্প্রদায়েরই এক লোক ছিল, নাম কারুন। আল্লাহ তাকে দিয়েছিলেন অসংখ্য ধন-সম্পদ। সোনা-রুপা আর মূল্যবান জিনিসে ভরা তার ভাণ্ডার এত বিশাল ছিল যে, শুধু সেগুলোর চাবি বহন করতেই একদল শক্তিশালী লোকের কষ্ট হতো!
This happened in the time of Musa (peace be upon him). Among his own people was a man named Qarun. Allah had given him enormous wealth. His storehouses of gold, silver, and precious things were so vast that even carrying their keys was hard work for a group of strong men!
এত সম্পদ পেয়ে কারুন কৃতজ্ঞ হলো না। বরং সে নিজের লোকদের ওপরই বাড়াবাড়ি আর উদ্ধত আচরণ করতে লাগল। চলাফেরায়, কথায়—সব জায়গায় ফুটে উঠত তার অহংকার।
Yet Qarun was not grateful for all this wealth. Instead, he behaved arrogantly and unjustly toward his own people. His pride showed in the way he walked, the way he talked, everywhere.
সম্প্রদায়ের জ্ঞানী লোকেরা তাকে বোঝাতে এল। তারা বলল, “এত গর্ব করো না, আল্লাহ দাম্ভিকদের পছন্দ করেন না। আল্লাহ তোমাকে যা দিয়েছেন, তা দিয়ে আখিরাতের কল্যাণ খোঁজো। দুনিয়ায় তোমার নিজের অংশও ভুলে যেয়ো না। আল্লাহ যেমন তোমার প্রতি দয়া করেছেন, তুমিও মানুষের প্রতি দয়া করো। আর পৃথিবীতে অশান্তি ছড়াতে চেয়ো না।”
The wise people of the community came to advise him. They said, “Do not be so boastful; Allah does not love the boastful. Use what Allah has given you to seek the good of the Hereafter, and do not forget your share of this world. Be good to others as Allah has been good to you, and do not try to spread mischief in the land.”
কারুন নাক উঁচু করে উত্তর দিল, “এসব আমি পেয়েছি আমার নিজের জ্ঞান আর যোগ্যতার জোরে!” কৃতজ্ঞতার জায়গায় অহংকার আরও বড় হলো। সে ভুলে গেল, তার আগেও অনেক মানুষ ছিল, যারা তার চেয়েও শক্তিশালী ও ধনী ছিল।
Qarun lifted his nose and replied, “I was given all this because of my own knowledge and skill!” Instead of gratitude, his pride grew even bigger. He forgot that before him there had been many people far stronger and richer than he was.
একদিন কারুন সেজেগুজে, জমকালো পোশাক পরে, বিরাট জাঁকজমক নিয়ে লোকজনের সামনে বের হলো। ঝলমলে কাপড়, চকচকে সাজ, পেছনে লোকলশকর—দেখে চোখ ধাঁধিয়ে যায়! যারা শুধু দুনিয়ার জীবন চাইত, তারা বলে উঠল, “আহা, কারুনকে যা দেওয়া হয়েছে, আমাদেরও যদি তেমন থাকত! সে সত্যিই বড় ভাগ্যবান।”
One day Qarun came out before the people in all his finery, dressed in dazzling clothes, with a grand procession behind him. Glittering garments, shining ornaments, crowds of servants: it was enough to make anyone stare! Those who cared only for the life of this world said, “Oh, if only we had what Qarun has been given! He is truly very fortunate.”
কিন্তু যাদের জ্ঞান দেওয়া হয়েছিল, তারা বলল, “আফসোস তোমাদের জন্য! যে ঈমান আনে আর ভালো কাজ করে, তার জন্য আল্লাহর দেওয়া পুরস্কার এর চেয়ে অনেক ভালো। আর তা পায় কেবল ধৈর্যশীলরাই।”
But those who had been given knowledge said, “Shame on you! Allah’s reward is far better for those who believe and do good deeds, and only the patient will receive it.”
তারপর আল্লাহর হুকুমে কারুন এবং তার গৃহ-সম্পদ ভূমিতে ধসে গেল। তাকে সাহায্য করার মতো কোনো দল ছিল না, নিজেকেও সে রক্ষা করতে পারল না। যারা আগের দিন তার ঐশ্বর্য দেখে তার মতো হতে চেয়েছিল, তারা এবার বলল, “আল্লাহ যাকে চান তার রিজিক বাড়িয়ে দেন, যাকে চান কমিয়ে দেন। আল্লাহ আমাদের প্রতি দয়া না করলে আমাদেরও এই দশা হতো!” তারা বুঝল, ধনই নিরাপত্তা নয়।
Then, by Allah’s command, the earth swallowed Qarun and his home. There was no group to help him, and he could not save himself. Those who had wished to be like him the day before now said, “Allah gives more provision to whomever He wills and less to whomever He wills. If Allah had not been kind to us, the same could have happened to us!” They understood that wealth alone is no protection.
প্রতিভা, টাকা বা সুন্দর জিনিস পেলে আনন্দ করা যায়, কিন্তু তা নিয়ে অহংকার করা বা অন্যকে ছোট করা ঠিক নয়। সব নিয়ামত আল্লাহর দান—কৃতজ্ঞতা, দান আর বিনয়ই সম্পদকে অর্থপূর্ণ করে।
Talent, money, or beautiful things can bring us joy, but they are never a reason for pride or for looking down on others. Every blessing is a gift from Allah, and gratitude, generosity, and humility are what give wealth its true meaning.
