Long ago there were two friends. Allah gave one of them two wonderful gardens. They were full of grapevines, ringed by rows of date palms, with green crops swaying in the fields between. Through the middle of the gardens a stream of water bubbled along. Every year the harvest was rich: heavy bunches of grapes and plump, juicy dates.

The other friend had far less, but his heart was full of the remembrance of Allah. One day, while they were talking, the garden owner puffed out his chest and said, “Look, I have much more wealth than you, and more people on my side too.”

Then he led his friend into the garden. The sweet smell of ripe fruit, the chirping birds, the trickling water: all of it made his pride grow even bigger. “I don’t think this garden will ever be ruined,” he said. “My wealth is great.” He even doubted that the Day of Judgement would come, and added, “And even if I am returned to my Lord, I will surely find something better than this.”

His honest friend answered calmly, “Do you deny the One who created you from dust and then made you a complete human being? As for me, I believe He is my Lord, and I associate no one with Him.”

He went on, “When you entered your garden, why didn’t you say, ‘Masha’Allah, la quwwata illa billah’: what Allah wills happens, and there is no power except with Allah? Having more wealth doesn’t make anyone greater. You see that I have less, but perhaps my Lord will give me something better than your garden. And if He wills, He can change your garden in a single moment.”

But the garden owner paid no attention. Life went on as before. Then one day disaster struck his beloved garden. All the fruit was ruined, and the grapevines collapsed, trellises and all. Where he had once boasted of green abundance, there was only empty, broken ground.

The man stood there stunned. He wrung his hands in regret over everything he had spent on the garden. That day there was no one to help him, and he could not save himself. Helpless, he finally understood that possessions do not last forever. He cried out, “Oh, I wish I had never associated anyone with my Lord!” He deeply regretted his arrogance.

A lovely home, money, or possessions can bring joy, but they must come with gratitude and humility. True richness is remembering that what we have is a gift from Allah, and using it with care and fairness.
