The Courage of Two Young Companions

On the day of Badr, two young Ansari boys standing beside Abdur Rahman ibn Awf ask him which man is Abu Jahl, who insulted the Prophet ﷺ. Once he points him out, they carry out their duty bravely, and the Prophet ﷺ credits them both. The story shows that courage and responsibility are not measured by age alone.

It was the month of Ramadan in the second year after the Hijrah. Some distance from Madinah lay a sandy plain called Badr, with hot sand all around and a few wells in the middle. Two groups stood facing each other there: on one side about three hundred and thirteen Muslims with the Prophet ﷺ, on the other a much larger, well-equipped army of the Quraysh from Makkah.

Standing in the Muslim ranks was an older Companion, Abdur Rahman ibn Awf (may Allah be pleased with him). He looked to his right and left and saw two young boys of the Ansar beside him. They were so young! He thought to himself, “If only I had stronger men on either side of me.” He did not yet know that, though small in years, these two were not small in responsibility.

Suddenly one of the boys nudged him quietly and asked, “Uncle, do you know Abu Jahl?” Abdur Rahman replied, “Yes, I know him. But what do you want with him, nephew?” The boy said, “I have heard that he insults the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By the One in whose hand my soul is, if I see him, I will not let him go.”

Abdur Rahman was astonished. Just then the boy on his other side nudged him too, asked the same question, and said the same thing. Neither of them rushed forward blindly. First they wanted to know who this man was, the one who showed such fierce hostility toward the Prophet ﷺ and the Muslims, and why he had to be stopped.

A little later Abdur Rahman saw Abu Jahl moving among the people. He pointed and said, “There he is, the one you asked about.” When the battle began, the two boys moved forward quickly and carried out their duty with great courage. That day the proud leader of the Quraysh was defeated at their hands. Seeing such determination in ones so young, even the grown men were amazed.

Afterwards both boys went to the Prophet ﷺ with the news. He asked, “Which of you did it?” Each said, “I did.” The Prophet ﷺ looked at their two swords and said, “You both did it.” These two brave youths were Mu’adh ibn Amr ibn al-Jamuh and Mu’adh ibn Afra (may Allah be pleased with them).

The heart of this event is not only courage in battle. The two boys showed that even when you are young, you can understand your responsibility, act with the right purpose, and be brave.

Courage never means recklessness. First understand the situation, learn from trustworthy elders, and then carry out the task you have taken on with honesty and steadiness.
