It was Ramadan. In Madinah, the Ramadan zakat food had been collected to be given to the poor before Eid: heaps of dates and grain. The Prophet ﷺ put the Companion Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) in charge of guarding it. Night fell, everything was still, and only the crickets chirped.
Suddenly, a rustle! Abu Hurairah saw someone creep up and start scooping up food with both hands. He grabbed him: “I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” The man pleaded, “I am very poor, I have a family, and I am in great need.” Abu Hurairah’s heart softened, and out of kindness he let him go.
In the morning the Prophet ﷺ asked, “Abu Hurairah, what did your captive do last night?” He explained everything. The Prophet ﷺ said, “He lied to you, and he will come back.”
The next night Abu Hurairah waited, wide awake. Sure enough, the man came again and began taking food. He was caught again and made the same plea: “I am poor, I have a family, I won’t come back.” Once more, out of kindness, Abu Hurairah let him go. In the morning the Prophet ﷺ said the same thing: “He lied, and he will come back.”
On the third night it happened again. This time Abu Hurairah held on tight and said, “This is the third time! Each time you say you won’t come back, and still you come. This time I am taking you.” The man said, “Let me go, and I will teach you some words by which Allah will benefit you. When you go to bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi to the end. Then a guardian from Allah will stay with you until morning, and Shaytan will not come near you.” Abu Hurairah let him go.
In the morning he told the Prophet ﷺ what the man had said. The Prophet ﷺ said, “He is a great liar, but this time he told you the truth. Do you know whom you were talking to these three nights?” Abu Hurairah said, “No.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “That was Shaytan.”
The event holds a wonderful lesson. Sometimes even the wrong person can say something true. And Abu Hurairah did not just assume; he checked with the Prophet ﷺ, which was the wise thing to do. To this day, many Muslims recite Ayat al-Kursi before going to sleep.
Still, that doesn’t mean we should believe every claim without checking. Accept the truth, but also check where a statement comes from and whether that source can be trusted.
