Ibrahim (peace be upon him) asked Allah for a righteous child. Allah gave him the good news of a forbearing, patient son. That son was Ismail (peace be upon him), and patience can be seen in his story from the very beginning.
By Allah’s command, Ibrahim took baby Ismail and his mother Hajar to a lonely valley in Makkah. All around were bare hills and hot sand; there were no people and no water. They had only a bag of dates and a skin of water. Hajar asked, “Has Allah commanded you to do this?” Ibrahim said, “Yes.” Then Hajar said, “In that case, Allah will not abandon us.”
Within a few days the water ran out. Baby Ismail began to cry with thirst. Anxious, his mother climbed the hill of Safa and looked all around: was anyone there? Then she hurried to the hill of Marwah. Seven times she went back and forth. Then, by Allah’s mercy, right beside the baby, water came bubbling out of the ground: Zamzam! Hajar heaped up earth around it to hold the water. To this day, pilgrims walk between Safa and Marwah, remembering a mother’s search.
Ismail grew up. When he was old enough to walk and work alongside his father, another great test came. Ibrahim said, “My dear son, I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you. Think about it: what do you say?”
Ismail answered calmly, “Father, do what you have been commanded. If Allah wills, you will find me among the patient.” When both of them had submitted to Allah’s command, Allah called out, “O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.” Allah ransomed Ismail with a great sacrifice, an animal sent in his place. At Eid al-Adha, Muslims still remember that obedience.
Later still, by Allah’s command, Ibrahim began to build the Kaaba. Ismail carried stone after stone, and his father laid them into the walls. Tap, tap, the walls slowly rose. As they worked, they prayed together, “Our Lord, accept this from us. Truly, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
In every chapter of his life, one quality shows again and again in Ismail: trusting Allah instead of running away from responsibility. The Qur’an also praises him as one who was true to his promise.
Patience is not just waiting quietly. It means keeping on trying in hard times, standing by your family, helping with good work, and holding on to faith when things are difficult.
