মদিনা ছিল খেজুরবাগানে ঘেরা এক শহর। বাতাসে ভাসত পাকা খেজুরের মিষ্টি গন্ধ, পাতার ফাঁকে টুনটুনি পাখির কিচিরমিচির। সেই শহরে এক এতিম শিশুর একটি ছোট বাগান ছিল। সে বাগানের চারপাশে দেয়াল তুলছিল, কিন্তু মাঝপথে এসে আটকে গেল—একটি খেজুরগাছ ঠিক পথের ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছে, আর গাছটি পাশের এক প্রতিবেশীর।
Madinah was a city surrounded by date-palm gardens. The sweet smell of ripe dates filled the air, and little birds chirped among the fronds. In that city an orphan had a small garden. He was building a wall around it, but halfway along he got stuck: a date palm stood right in the way, and it belonged to a neighbour.
গাছটি পেলে তার দেয়াল ঠিকমতো দাঁড়াবে। শিশুটি প্রতিবেশীর কাছে গাছটি চাইল, কিন্তু সে দিতে রাজি হলো না। তখন বিষয়টি নবীজি (সা.)-এর কাছে পৌঁছাল। নবীজি (সা.) প্রতিবেশীকে বললেন, “গাছটি তাকে দিয়ে দাও; এর বিনিময়ে তুমি জান্নাতে একটি খেজুরগাছ পাবে।” কিন্তু লোকটি তবুও রাজি হলো না। সহজে সমাধান হচ্ছিল না।
With that tree, his wall could stand properly. The orphan asked the neighbour for it, but the neighbour refused. The matter was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, who said to the neighbour, “Give him the tree, and in exchange you will have a date palm in Paradise.” Still the man would not agree. The problem could not easily be solved.
ঘটনার কথা শুনলেন সাহাবি আবু দাহদাহ (রা.)। “জান্নাতে একটি খেজুরগাছ!”—কথাটা যেন তাঁর মনের ভেতর বারবার বাজতে লাগল। তিনি দুনিয়ার লাভের চেয়ে আল্লাহর সন্তুষ্টিকে বড় মনে করলেন। সোজা প্রতিবেশীর কাছে গিয়ে বললেন, “তোমার ওই একটি গাছের বদলে আমার পুরো খেজুরবাগানটি নাও।” লোকটি রাজি হয়ে গেল।
The Companion Abu Dahdah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard about it. “A date palm in Paradise!” The words kept ringing in his heart. He valued Allah’s pleasure above any worldly gain. He went straight to the neighbour and said, “Take my whole date garden in exchange for that one tree of yours.” The man agreed.
আবু দাহদাহ (রা.)-এর বাগান ছিল দেখার মতো—অসংখ্য খেজুরগাছ, ঘন ছায়া, থোকায় থোকায় ঝুলে থাকা সোনালি খেজুর। তবু এতিমের উপকার আর আখিরাতের পুরস্কারের আশায় তিনি তা ছেড়ে দিলেন। তিনি নবীজি (সা.)-এর কাছে এসে বললেন, “হে আল্লাহর রাসুল, আমি গাছটি আমার বাগানের বিনিময়ে কিনে নিয়েছি। গাছটি আপনি ওই এতিমকে দিয়ে দিন।”
Abu Dahdah’s garden was a sight to see: countless palms, deep shade, and golden dates hanging in heavy bunches. Yet, hoping to help the orphan and to earn a reward in the Hereafter, he gave it all up. He came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have bought the tree in exchange for my garden. Please give it to the orphan.”
নবীজি (সা.) খুব খুশি হলেন। তিনি বারবার বললেন, “জান্নাতে আবু দাহদাহর জন্য কত যে ফলভারে নুয়ে পড়া খেজুরগাছ রয়েছে!”
The Prophet ﷺ was delighted. Again and again he said, “How many date palms heavy with fruit are waiting for Abu Dahdah in Paradise!”
তারপর আবু দাহদাহ (রা.) বাড়ির দিকে রওনা হলেন। বাগানের দেয়ালের কাছে দাঁড়িয়ে তিনি স্ত্রীকে ডাকলেন, “উম্মে দাহদাহ! বাগান থেকে বেরিয়ে এসো। আমি বাগানটি জান্নাতের একটি খেজুরগাছের বিনিময়ে বিক্রি করে দিয়েছি।” পরিবারের সামনে ছিল বড় ত্যাগ, কিন্তু উদ্দেশ্য ছিল আরও বড় কল্যাণ।
Then Abu Dahdah set off for home. Standing by the wall of his garden, he called to his wife, “Umm Dahdah! Come out of the garden. I have sold it in exchange for a date palm in Paradise.” His family faced a big sacrifice, but the purpose was an even greater good.
উম্মে দাহদাহ (রা.) একটুও মন খারাপ করলেন না। খুশি হয়ে বললেন, “তুমি তো খুব লাভজনক বেচাকেনা করেছ!” তারপর পরিবারের সবাই হাসিমুখে বাগান ছেড়ে বেরিয়ে এলেন। দুনিয়ার একটি বাগান তাঁরা ছেড়ে দিলেন, কিন্তু মনে রইল জান্নাতের সুসংবাদ।
Umm Dahdah (may Allah be pleased with her) was not upset at all. She said happily, “You have made a very profitable deal!” Then the whole family walked out of the garden with smiles on their faces. They had left behind a garden in this world, but they carried in their hearts the good news of Paradise.
দান শুধু অতিরিক্ত জিনিস দেওয়া নয়। কখনো সত্যিকারের উদারতা হলো প্রিয় ও মূল্যবান কিছু থেকেও অন্যের প্রয়োজনকে গুরুত্ব দেওয়া। যে হৃদয় ভাগ করতে শেখে, তার কাছে সম্পদের অর্থই বদলে যায়।
Giving is not only handing over what we don’t need. Sometimes true generosity means putting someone else’s need ahead of something dear and precious to us. For a heart that learns to share, the very meaning of wealth changes.
