The Encounter with Dajjal

The Prophet ﷺ tells the people that Tamim al-Dari, after a month adrift at sea, reached an unknown island and met a bound man who called himself the Dajjal and admitted he could never enter Makkah or Madinah. Tamim did not spread rumours but reported it to the Prophet ﷺ. The story encourages knowledge, checking facts, and trust in Allah rather than fear.

One day, after the prayer in the mosque of Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ asked everyone to stay seated. He sat on the pulpit with a gentle smile. He told them that a man named Tamim al-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him), who had been a Christian, had come and accepted Islam, and had told him of something that happened to him. It matched what the Prophet ﷺ had already taught them about the Dajjal.

Tamim had once set out on a sea voyage with about thirty men from the tribes of Lakhm and Judham. In the open sea, huge waves rose up. Amid the howling wind and crashing waves, their ship was tossed this way and that for a whole month. No one knew where they were heading.

At last, one evening as the sun was setting, they came near an unknown island. They rowed ashore in small boats. There they met a strange creature covered in thick hair, so thick you could not tell its front from its back! The creature told them that in a building over there was a man who was very eager to hear their news.

They hurried to the building and found a huge man, tightly bound. He began asking them question after question: Do the date palms of Baysan still bear fruit? Is there still water in the Lake of Tiberias? Do people farm with the water of the spring of Zughar? Then he asked whether the prophet expected among the Arabs had appeared.

They said, “Yes, he has. He migrated from Makkah to Madinah, and people have accepted him.” The man said it was better for them to obey him. Then he revealed who he was: he was the Masih al-Dajjal. He said that one day he would be allowed to come out and travel the earth, but that he would never be able to enter Makkah or Madinah, because angels would guard every path into them.

The experience was mysterious and unsettling. But Tamim did not make up guesses or spread rumours. He came and told the Prophet ﷺ everything. The Prophet ﷺ was glad that it agreed with what he had taught. Tapping the pulpit with his stick, he said of Madinah, “This is Taybah, this is Taybah,” meaning that this blessed city would be kept safe.

Stories about the Dajjal are not meant to frighten children. When we hear strange or alarming news, we should not panic but check whether it is true and turn to reliable knowledge. In another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever memorises the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the trial of the Dajjal.

We will not always have the answer to every mystery right away. So instead of fear, our first path should be reliable knowledge, care, and trust in Allah.
