The Wise Boy

A tyrant king sends a boy to learn from his court magician, but on the way the boy learns faith in the One God from a righteous, learned man.

Long ago, a tyrant king ruled a land, and he wanted everyone to bow before his power alone. At his court lived an old magician. One day the magician said, “Your Majesty, I have grown old. Send me a boy so that I can teach him all my skills.” The king chose a clever boy and sent him to the magician.

On the way to the magician’s house stood the small hut of a righteous, learned man who worshipped Allah alone. One day the boy sat beside him and listened, and the words touched his heart deeply. After that, going and coming, he would stop to sit with him and learn about truth and faith.

One day an enormous beast blocked the road. People froze in fear; no one could pass. The boy thought, “Today I will find out whose way is dearer to Allah.” He picked up a pebble and said, “O Allah, if the way of that righteous man is dearer to You than the way of the magician, then remove this beast so that people can pass.” He threw the stone, the beast collapsed, and the road was open. When the learned man heard, he said, “My son, today you have gone further than me. But remember, you will be tested.”

After that, by Allah’s permission, blind and sick people were healed through the boy’s prayers. Yet he always told them, “I do not heal anyone; it is Allah who heals. If you believe in Allah, I will pray to Him for you.” Even one of the king’s courtiers, who was blind, believed in this way and got his sight back.

The news reached the king, and he was furious! He had the boy brought before him. First he threatened him, then he tempted him with riches, honour, and much more. He wanted the boy to abandon the truth, whatever it took. But though the boy was young, his thinking was steady. He understood that being powerful does not make anyone the owner of truth.

The king ordered his men to take the boy up a high mountain, and then out to sea in a boat, to frighten him into giving up his faith. Each time the boy prayed, “O Allah, protect me from them in whatever way You will.” And each time Allah protected him. He walked back safely and stood before the king again. Pressure came again and again, yet he would not call a lie the truth.

Seeing all this, the people of the city began to think. They whispered to one another, “Are we accepting what is wrong just because we are afraid? The Lord this boy trusts must be far greater than the king.” The tyrant had outward power, but the boy had faith, patience, and clear judgement.

Courage needs wisdom too. It does not mean taking needless risks; real courage is recognizing the truth, listening to good people, trusting Allah, and staying steady.
