Three People from Bani Israel

Three men of the Children of Israel, a leper, a bald man, and a blind man, are given health and wealth by Allah through an angel. Years later the angel returns as a poor traveller asking for help: the first two deny their past, while the third stays grateful and gives generously. Allah is pleased with the grateful one.

The Prophet ﷺ once told his Companions a story. Among the Children of Israel were three men with serious difficulties: one had a skin disease like leprosy, one was completely bald, and one was blind. People avoided them, and their days were full of hardship and want.

Allah wished to test them, so He sent an angel. The angel came first to the man with the skin disease and asked, “What would you love most?” He said, “Good colour, healthy skin, and to be free of this illness that makes people shun me.” The angel passed his hand over him, the illness vanished, and his skin became clear and fine. Then the angel asked, “What kind of wealth do you love most?” He said, “Camels.” The angel gave him a pregnant she-camel and said, “May Allah bless it for you.”

Next the angel went to the bald man. He wished for good hair, and his head filled with hair. For wealth he chose cows, and he was given a pregnant cow. Last of all the angel went to the blind man. He said, “I wish Allah would give me back my sight so that I can see people.” Allah restored his sight. He chose sheep, and he was given a pregnant ewe.

Days passed and years went by. The camels, cows, and sheep multiplied until one man had a valley full of camels, another a valley full of cows, and the third a valley full of sheep! The air rang with mooing and bleating.

Much later the angel returned, this time looking like the first man used to look: a poor traveller. He said, “I am a poor traveller whose supplies have run out on the road. In the name of Allah, who gave you healthy skin and all this wealth, I ask you for one camel.” The man turned away: “I have many expenses; I can’t.” The angel said, “You look familiar! Weren’t you the sick, poor man whom Allah gave all this?” Denying his past, the man said, “This wealth was passed down to me from my forefathers.” The angel said, “If you are lying, may Allah return you to how you were.” The same happened with the bald man, who denied his past in the very same way.

Finally the angel came to the third man, looking as the blind man once had. Hearing the same request, the man said, “I was once blind, and Allah gave me sight. I was poor, and Allah made me rich. This wealth is His gift too. Take whatever you need and leave whatever you wish. I will not hold you back from anything you take for Allah’s sake.”

Then the angel said, “Keep your wealth. The three of you were only being tested. Allah is pleased with you and displeased with your two companions.” And so it became clear that this had been a test of gratitude.

When we are given health, talent, opportunity, or wealth, we should never forget our hard days. Gratitude is more than saying “Alhamdulillah”; sharing our blessings with someone in need is part of it too.
