Musa (peace be upon him) learned that at the place where two seas meet there was a servant of Allah who had been given special knowledge. Eager to learn more, he set out with his young companion. They carried a fish: where the fish was lost, there they would find the wise man. Musa said, “I will not stop until I reach the meeting of the two seas, however long it takes.”
On the way they rested beside a rock. While they were there, the fish slipped into the water with a plop and, in an amazing way, made its path into the sea. But the young man forgot to mention it. After walking a long way, Musa said, “Bring us our meal; we are very tired from this journey.” The young man started: “At the rock the fish went into the sea, and I forgot to tell you!” Musa said, “That is exactly the place we were looking for!” And they followed their own footprints back.
There they found Khidr (peace be upon him), a servant of Allah to whom Allah had given mercy and knowledge from Himself. Musa asked humbly, “May I follow you so that you can teach me some of what you have been taught?” Khidr replied, “You will not be able to be patient with me. How can you be patient with what you do not fully understand?” Musa said, “If Allah wills, you will find me patient.” The condition was that Musa would ask nothing until Khidr himself explained.
They boarded a boat, and its poor boatmen carried them without charging a fare. But Khidr pulled out one of the boat’s planks and damaged it! Musa could not keep quiet: “Do you want to drown its passengers? This is a serious thing!” Khidr reminded him, “Didn’t I tell you that you could not be patient?” Musa said, “I forgot; please don’t be hard on me.” Just then a little bird perched on the edge of the boat and took a drop of water from the sea with its beak. Khidr said, “Compared to Allah’s knowledge, my knowledge and yours are like the water in this bird’s beak.”
Later on the way, a difficult event happened involving a boy, something Musa simply could not accept. He cried out, “You have done a terrible thing!” Khidr reminded him of the condition once more. Musa said, “If I ask you about anything after this, then don’t keep me with you.”
Travelling on, they reached a town. Hungry, they asked for food, but the people refused to welcome them. There they found a wall about to fall down, and Khidr straightened and repaired it without asking for payment. Surprised, Musa said, “If you had wished, you could have been paid for this!” Khidr said, “This is where we part. Now I will explain everything to you.”
He said, “The boat belonged to poor people who earn their living at sea. Ahead was a tyrant king seizing every good boat by force, so I gave it a flaw so they could keep it. The boy’s parents were believers, and Allah wished to give them, in his place, a child better in goodness and more loving. As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the town. Beneath it lay their treasure, and their father had been a righteous man. Allah wished that they should grow up and take out their treasure. All of this was a mercy from your Lord; I did none of it of my own accord.”
Human knowledge is limited. Asking questions is good, but learning also needs humility and patience, and we should not rush to judge something when we only see part of it.
