This happened shortly before the Prophet ﷺ was born. Abraha, the ruler of Yemen, built a huge, splendid house of worship in the city of San’a. He wanted the Arabs to come to his building instead of going to the Kaaba in Makkah. But people loved the Kaaba. Angry and proud, Abraha decided to destroy it, and he marched toward Makkah with a mighty army.
Huge elephants travelled with the army, and at the front walked one enormous elephant. The ground shook under their heavy feet, and dust rose into the sky. The Arabs had never seen an army like it. Against such power, the people of the city could not hope to defend themselves in an ordinary battle.
Near Makkah, Abraha’s soldiers seized the people’s animals, among them two hundred camels belonging to Abdul Muttalib, a leader of the Quraysh. Abdul Muttalib went to Abraha and asked for his camels back. Abraha was astonished: “I have come to destroy your sacred House, and you talk about camels?” Abdul Muttalib calmly replied, “I am the owner of the camels, so I ask for them. The House has its own Owner, and He will protect it.”
The people of Makkah left the city and took shelter in the surrounding hills. Human strength was not the only protection the Kaaba had. The next day Abraha lined up his army and ordered it to advance on the Kaaba. But how strange! Whenever the lead elephant was turned toward the Kaaba, it sat down with a thump and would not move a single step. Turned in any other direction, it walked along happily!
Just then the sky filled with flocks of small birds. The Qur’an calls them ‘ababil’, birds coming in flock after flock. They carried small stones of baked clay and pelted the army with them. Allah brought the proud army’s plan to complete failure; in the words of Surah Al-Fil, He made them like straw that has been eaten.
In Surah Al-Fil, Allah reminds us of this event: “Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the people of the elephant? Did He not make their plot go astray?” The Arabs remembered that year as the Year of the Elephant, and in that very year the Prophet ﷺ was born.
Small birds and tiny stones might seem like nothing next to a mighty army of elephants. Yet by Allah’s will they became the greatest power of all. Size and outward strength are not everything.
Trying to destroy something sacred or right out of pride is not greatness. However powerful people may be, their power has limits, and outward strength cannot stand against the will of Allah.
The lesson
However great worldly power is, it is limited before Allah’s will.
