The Miraculous Adhan

In a city ruled by a tyrant, people stay silent out of fear, but the call to prayer from the imam of a small market mosque never stops. Even in the hardest days, that familiar call gives people courage to stand by one another and speak the truth. In the end, the oppressor’s pride does not last.

By a river stood an old city ruled by a proud, harsh ruler. The streets shook with the thud of his soldiers’ heavy boots. People spoke only in whispers. Even when they saw something unjust, many kept quiet, thinking, “Why get into trouble?”

In a corner of the market stood a small, old mosque. Its imam had a snow-white beard and a clear, sweet voice. Five times a day his call to prayer rang out: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar.” In the lane beside the mosque lived a little boy. Whenever he heard the adhan, he stopped his game of marbles to listen.

One day the boy asked his grandmother, “Grandma, what does Allahu Akbar mean?” She smiled. “It means Allah is the Greatest. No king and no soldier is greater than Him. Before Allah everyone is equal, and unjust power never lasts forever.” The boy tucked those words carefully away in his heart.

Then things grew even harder. Drums were beaten and a strict new order was announced. Shops closed early, the streets emptied, and shutters banged shut. Fear spread through the whole city. But as evening fell, the imam slowly climbed the stairs. Fear had spread everywhere, yet the call to prayer did not stop.

The familiar call floated over the silent rooftops, farther and farther. To the boy it seemed as if the voice were tapping on every closed window. A weaver paused at his loom, a mother hugged her baby close, and an old shopkeeper wiped his eyes. Sitting behind closed doors, many people whispered, “Allahu Akbar.”

The next morning the city felt different. People began greeting each other with salam again. Someone took food to a sick, helpless neighbour whose door no one had dared to knock on for a long time. Someone else stood up at a gathering and spoke the truth plainly. The little boy asked in wonder, “Grandma, does the adhan know magic?” She stroked his head. “No, dear, it isn’t magic. The adhan simply reminds us that faith in Allah and justice are greater than fear.”

As the days went by, people learned to stand together on the side of what was right, and fear lost more and more of its power. In the end, the oppressor’s pride did not last. His harsh rule came to an end, and the city filled again with the bustle of the market and children’s laughter. The adhan still rang out from the little mosque, calm and clear as ever.

A call to worship can awaken justice, courage, and responsibility in people’s hearts. Standing for the truth is not always a loud fight; sometimes it simply means not giving up the right thing even when you are afraid.
