Talut and Jalut

When the Children of Israel ask for a king, Allah chooses Talut; many object that he lacks wealth, but Allah has given him knowledge and strength. On the march, many fail the test of the river, and a small faithful group faces Jalut’s huge army, praying for patience. By Allah’s permission they win, and Jalut falls at the hands of Dawud.

This happened in the age after Musa (peace be upon him). The Children of Israel had been driven from their homes and separated from their children by their enemies. Their leaders went to a prophet of theirs and said, “Appoint a king for us, so that under his leadership we can strive in Allah’s way in good order.” The prophet asked, “When the time to fight comes, won’t you turn back?” They answered firmly, “Why would we turn back?”

The prophet said, “Allah has chosen Talut as your king.” The people were astonished: “Talut? How can he be our king? He doesn’t have much wealth, and we are more deserving of kingship than he is!” Not everyone accepted the choice easily.

The prophet explained, “Allah has chosen him over you and has given him abundance in knowledge and in strength of body. Allah gives His kingdom to whomever He wills.” He also told them that, as a sign of Talut’s kingship, the sacred chest, the Tabut, would return to them, bringing tranquillity and relics left by the families of Musa and Harun, carried by angels. Leadership depends on knowledge, ability, and character, not just wealth.

Talut set out with the army. The road was long and sun-scorched, and their throats were parched. Talut said, “Ahead is a river, and Allah will test you with it. Whoever drinks his fill from it is not with me. Whoever does not drink is with me, except that a single handful is allowed.”

When they reached the bank and saw the cool water rippling past, many could not hold back. They drank more than they were allowed and failed the test. Only a small group obeyed and crossed the river with Talut.

On the other side they saw the mighty Jalut and his huge army. Some said fearfully, “Today we have no strength against Jalut and his soldiers.” But those with firm faith said, “How many a small group has overcome a large one by Allah’s permission! Allah is with the patient.” Though they were few, the believers did not lose heart.

They raised their hands and prayed, “Our Lord, pour patience upon us, keep our feet firm, and grant us victory.” By Allah’s permission they defeated the enemy army. During the battle, Jalut fell at the hands of Dawud (peace be upon him), who was in Talut’s army. Later Allah gave Dawud kingship and wisdom.

Numbers, wealth, and outward strength are not the only measures of success. Good leadership, self-control, patience, and trust in Allah while standing firm on the right path are great strengths too.

Patience, discipline, and faith in Allah matter more than numbers alone.
