Adam (AS) and Hawa (AS) had made their home on the earth. Their children were growing up—the sun rose each morning, birds called beyond the hills, and everyone was busy with the day’s work. Two of Adam’s sons were named Qabil and Habil.

One day, the two brothers each offered a sacrifice to Allah. Allah accepted Habil’s offering, but Qabil’s offering was not accepted. Both brothers had brought an offering, but Allah sees not only what people do outwardly—He also sees what is in their hearts.

When Qabil learned this, jealousy flared up inside him like fire. Instead of being happy for his brother, he seethed with anger. At last he said to Habil, “I will kill you!”

Habil stayed calm. He said, “Allah accepts only from those who are mindful of Him. Even if you stretch out your hand to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand to kill you. I fear Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.” Habil also reminded his brother of what wrongdoing leads to.

But Qabil would not listen to good advice. Instead of stopping his anger and jealousy, he let them grow. In the end his own soul pushed him towards a terrible wrong—he killed his brother. And he became one of the losers.

Afterwards, Qabil did not know what to do with his brother’s body. Then Allah sent a crow. The crow scratched at the ground with its beak, so that Qabil could see how to cover his brother’s body with earth.

Watching the crow, Qabil cried out in sorrow, “Woe to me! Couldn’t I even be like this crow and cover my brother’s body?” Then he became full of regret. But what had happened could never be undone.

Right after this story, the Qur’an says that whoever saves one life, it is as if he has saved all of humanity. So when jealousy rises in our hearts, we must stop, listen to good advice, and keep our hearts clean when we see others succeed.
