অনেক কাল আগে সামূদ নামে এক শক্তিশালী জাতি ছিল। তারা পাহাড় কেটে সুন্দর সুন্দর ঘর বানাত, সমতলে গড়ত প্রাসাদ। তাদের ছিল খেজুরের বাগান, ঝরনার পানি আর সবুজ খেত। কিন্তু এত নিয়ামত পেয়েও তারা আল্লাহকে ভুলে গিয়েছিল।
Long ago there lived a powerful people called Thamud. They carved beautiful homes out of the mountains and built palaces on the plains. They had date-palm gardens, flowing springs and green fields. But despite all these blessings, they had forgotten Allah.
আল্লাহ তাদেরই একজন, সালেহ (আ.)-কে নবী করে পাঠালেন। সালেহ (আ.) বললেন, “হে আমার জাতি, আল্লাহর ইবাদত করো; তিনি ছাড়া তোমাদের আর কোনো উপাস্য নেই।” তিনি তাদের আল্লাহর দেওয়া নিয়ামতের কথা মনে করিয়ে দিলেন এবং পৃথিবীতে অশান্তি ছড়াতে নিষেধ করলেন।
Allah sent one of their own, Saleh (AS), to them as a prophet. Saleh (AS) said, “O my people, worship Allah; you have no god other than Him.” He reminded them of the blessings Allah had given them and told them not to spread corruption on the earth.
কয়েকজন মানুষ ঈমান আনল, কিন্তু অহংকারী নেতারা মানল না। তারা বলল, “তুমি সত্যবাদী হলে কোনো নিদর্শন নিয়ে এসো।”
A few people believed, but the proud leaders refused. They said, “If you are telling the truth, bring us a sign.”
তখন আল্লাহ তাদের জন্য একটি বিশেষ উটনী পাঠালেন—তাঁর পক্ষ থেকে এক স্পষ্ট নিদর্শন। সালেহ (আ.) বললেন, “এটি আল্লাহর উটনী, তোমাদের জন্য নিদর্শন। একে আল্লাহর জমিনে চরে খেতে দাও, কোনো কষ্ট দিয়ো না; নইলে কঠিন শাস্তি তোমাদের পাকড়াও করবে।” পানির জন্যও পালা ঠিক করে দেওয়া হলো—এক দিন উটনীর পানি পানের পালা, আর এক নির্দিষ্ট দিন মানুষের।
So Allah sent them a special she-camel—a clear sign from Him. Saleh (AS) said, “This is the she-camel of Allah, a sign for you. Let her graze freely on Allah’s earth and do her no harm, or a painful punishment will seize you.” A turn was set for the water too—one day for the camel to drink, and a set day for the people.
কিছুদিন এভাবেই চলল। উটনীটি শান্তভাবে মাঠে চরে বেড়াত, আর নিজের দিনে কূপের পানি পান করত। কিন্তু অহংকারী লোকদের কাছে এই নিয়ম অসহ্য লাগল। তাদের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে দুর্ভাগা লোকটি এগিয়ে এল, আর তারা আল্লাহর নির্দেশ অমান্য করে উটনীটিকে মেরে ফেলল। তারপর ঔদ্ধত্য দেখিয়ে বলল, “হে সালেহ, তুমি যদি সত্যিই রাসূল হও, তাহলে যে শাস্তির ভয় দেখাচ্ছ, তা নিয়ে এসো!”
For a while, things went on like this. The camel grazed peacefully in the fields and drank from the well on her day. But the proud people could not bear this rule. The most wretched among them stepped forward, and, disobeying Allah’s command, they killed the she-camel. Then they said defiantly, “O Saleh, if you really are a messenger, bring us the punishment you warn us about!”
সালেহ (আ.) বললেন, “তোমরা আর তিন দিন তোমাদের ঘরে জীবন ভোগ করে নাও। এটি এমন এক প্রতিশ্রুতি, যা মিথ্যা হবে না।”
Saleh (AS) said, “Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three more days. This is a promise that will not prove false.”
তারপর আল্লাহর হুকুম এল। আল্লাহ নিজের দয়ায় সালেহ (আ.) ও বিশ্বাসীদের রক্ষা করলেন। আর অবাধ্যদের এক প্রচণ্ড আওয়াজ পাকড়াও করল। তাদের পাহাড়-কাটা সুন্দর ঘরগুলো এমন খালি পড়ে রইল, যেন সেখানে কেউ কখনো বাস করেনি। সালেহ (আ.) দুঃখভরা মনে বললেন, “হে আমার জাতি, আমি তো তোমাদের কাছে আমার রবের বাণী পৌঁছে দিয়েছিলাম, তোমাদের ভালো চেয়েছিলাম; কিন্তু তোমরা কল্যাণকামীদের পছন্দ করো না।”
Then Allah’s command came. By His mercy, Allah saved Saleh (AS) and the believers. And a mighty blast seized those who had disobeyed. Their beautiful mountain homes were left so empty, it was as if no one had ever lived there. With a sorrowful heart, Saleh (AS) said, “O my people, I delivered my Lord’s message to you and wished you well, but you do not like those who give good advice.”
কোনো প্রাণী দুর্বল বলে তার অধিকার ছোট হয়ে যায় না। অহংকার মানুষকে সতর্কবাণী ভুলিয়ে দেয়, তাই আল্লাহর দেওয়া সীমা আর দায়িত্বকে সম্মান করতে হয়।
An animal’s rights do not become small just because it is weaker than us. Pride makes people ignore warnings, so we must respect the limits and responsibilities Allah has given us.
