Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) in the Fire

To show his people that idol worship is wrong, Ibrahim (AS) breaks their idols, leaving only the biggest so they will think. Though they see the truth, the proud people light a huge fire as punishment and throw him into it. By Allah’s command, the fire becomes cool and safe for him.

The people of Ibrahim (AS) carved idols out of stone and wood with their own hands, and then they worshipped those very idols. Even as a boy, Ibrahim (AS) wondered: how can a statue that people make themselves—one that cannot hear or see—deserve to be worshipped?

One day he asked his father and his people, “What are these statues you are so devoted to?” They said, “We found our forefathers worshipping them.” Ibrahim (AS) said, “You and your forefathers are clearly mistaken. Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the One who created them.”

One day, when the people of the town had gone out, Ibrahim (AS) went into the idol house. Food had been laid out in front of the idols. He said, “Why don’t you eat? Why don’t you speak?” Then he broke the idols into pieces, leaving only the biggest one—so that the people would come back and think.

When the people returned, they were shocked. “Who has done this to our gods?” Someone said, “We heard a young man called Ibrahim speaking about them.” He was brought before everyone. “Was it you who did this, O Ibrahim?” He replied, “Rather, this biggest one did it. Ask them—if they can speak!”

The people fell silent. Then, hanging their heads, they said, “You know very well that these don’t speak.” Ibrahim (AS) said, “Then do you worship, instead of Allah, things that can neither help you nor harm you?”

Even though they saw the truth, the powerful people would not let go of their pride. Angrily they said, “Burn him, and stand up for your gods!” As punishment, they lit a huge fire and decided to throw Ibrahim (AS) into it. The flames leapt high. But Ibrahim (AS) placed his trust in Allah. As he was thrown into the fire, he said, “Allah is enough for me, and He is the best One to rely on.”

Then Allah commanded, “O fire, be cool and safe for Ibrahim.” By Allah’s will, the fire became cool and safe for him. It could not harm him at all.

The people watched in amazement. The fire that had been lit to destroy could do nothing without Allah’s command. They had wanted to harm Ibrahim (AS), but Allah made their plan fail.

Courage does not mean having no fear; it means staying firm on the path of truth even when we are afraid. And true strength comes not from pride, but from trusting Allah.
