Long ago, in a village, there lived a poor young man. He did not have a single hair on his head, so everyone fondly called him ‘Nyara’, the bald one. People said the King of a faraway land had a daughter as wise as she was lovely. But no suitor could pass the King’s hard tasks. Nyara thought, “Bismillah, I’ll give it a try!” He tied five flatbreads in a bundle and set off.
In a thick forest he met an enormous giant. The giant’s stomach was rumbling. Without a second thought, Nyara gave him all five breads. The happy giant plucked a hair from his own head. “If you are ever in trouble, touch this to a flame and I will come.”
A little further on, beside a spring, he found another giant shivering with cold. Nyara took off his own coat and wrapped it around him. This giant, too, gave him one of his hairs. Then, by a river, he saw a crowd of ants who could not get across the water. Nyara dropped a piece of wood into the river to make a bridge, and the grateful King of the Ants gave him one of his tiny feelers.
At last he reached the palace. The gatekeeper asked, “What do you want?” Nyara smiled. “I’ve come to ask for the princess’s hand.” “For whom?” “Why, for me!” The whole court burst out laughing. The King said, “First task: you must bathe in our bathhouse.” Heated for seven days, its walls glowed red and its water bubbled and boiled!
Quietly, Nyara touched the second giant’s hair to a lamp flame. At once the shivering giant appeared! When he heard the problem he said, “This is a treat for me!” He took one huge breath, whoooosh, and all the heat of the bathhouse went into his chest. Next morning the King’s men found Nyara bathing in cool water and drying his hair, oops, his head!
Frowning, the King set the second task: “You must finish three hundred pots of pilau and three hundred pots of korma in one night.” Nyara burned the first giant’s hair, and the hungry giant appeared. Slurp, gulp, munch! He licked every pot clean and burped, “Alhamdulillah, my tummy is full at last!”
Then came the third task. Wheat, barley and lentils were mixed into a mountain as big as three donkey-loads. “Sort them all before dawn!” This time Nyara burned the Ant King’s feeler. Thousands and thousands of ants came streaming in. “Sleep well. This job is ours.” All night long, tick-tick-tick, they worked. At dawn Nyara opened his eyes to three neat heaps: one of wheat, one of barley and one of lentils.
Now the King gave in. “Tell me, who are these helpers of yours?” Nyara told him about the bread, the coat and the little bridge. The princess had been listening behind a curtain. She said, “Father, a man who feeds the hungry, warms the cold and even helps tiny ants — where would we find anyone better?”
The wedding was celebrated for seven days. The two giants came as guests, and so did millions of ants, with a special plate of sugar just for them! Nyara and the princess lived happily ever after. And Nyara always said, “A good deed is never lost. On the day you need it, it comes back to you as a friend.”
