Long ago, in the Persian city of Qazvin, there lived a wrestler named Sher Khan. He was huge, and his voice boomed like a roar. He would stand in the bazaar, puff out his chest and announce, “I have the strength of a lion! There’s no one in all Qazvin as brave as me!”
One day Sher Khan thought, “If my shield had a great big lion painted on it, everyone would be afraid of me from far away!” So he carried his heavy wooden shield on his shoulder to the shop of Ustad Karim, the city’s best-known painter. “Ustad,” he said, “paint me a great big lion on my shield. A real one, just like the king of beasts!”
Ustad Karim smiled. “Masha’Allah, a lion suits a wrestler’s shield. But there’s one thing: my paint is precious and dries slowly. After I paint each part, you must hold the shield up high with both hands, perfectly still, until it dries. You’ll need a little patience.” Sher Khan roared with laughter. “Patience? I’m Sher Khan! This shield is as light as a feather to me!”
The painter dipped his brush and began with the lion’s tail. “Now hold it up, wrestler. Don’t move!” Sher Khan lifted the shield. One minute passed, then two, and his arms began to tremble. “Ugh! How much longer? What are you painting?” “The lion’s tail, wrestler.” “Forget the tail! My lion will be a lion without a tail. If anyone asks, I’ll say he lost it in a fight!”
The painter scratched his head and went on to the lion’s mane. Sher Khan lifted the shield again, but soon sweat was dripping from his forehead. “Oh, my! What now?” “This is the lion’s mane, wrestler.” “Who needs a mane? Is the lion going to comb his hair? Leave out the mane!” Outside the shop, a crowd of children had gathered, trying very hard not to giggle.
Next the painter began the paws. By now Sher Khan’s arms wanted to droop. “Help, I’m done for! What’s this?” “The lion’s paw.” “Who looks at paws? No paws! Did I ask you to paint a whole zoo on my shield?” Quietly, the painter moved his brush to the lion’s belly.
Sher Khan had barely raised the shield when he started puffing and panting so loudly that the cat in the next shop shot into the air. Meow! “Oh my, what part is THIS?” “The lion’s belly. There’s no lion without a belly!” Gasping, Sher Khan said, “Then paint it so it’s a lion, but with no belly!”
At last Ustad Karim set down his brush and raised both hands. “For the love of Allah, let me off, wrestler! No tail, no mane, no paws, no belly? Nobody in Allah’s whole wide world has ever seen a lion like that!”
Then he said more gently, “Listen, brother. If you want to be brave like a lion, you must learn to bear a few small hardships. And real courage isn’t a picture on your shield; it lives in your heart, in staying patient when things are hard.” Red with embarrassment, Sher Khan carried his blank shield home in silence. And from that day on, he never again boasted in the bazaar.
The lesson
Great things need us to bear small hardships; true courage is patience, not boasting.
