Long ago, at the court of a Persian king, there worked a young man named Yusuf, the son of an army officer. He was gifted in learning and skilled with his hands. The king saw how clever he was and gave him an important post in the kingdom. The courtiers would say, “This young man has a bright future ahead, insha’Allah.”
Yusuf’s greatest gift was his gentle heart. He knew that to be respected, you must first show respect. From the gatekeeper to the old treasurer, he greeted everyone with a smile and a salam. When the gardener’s basket was heavy, he lent a hand. When the old scribe’s eyes grew weak, Yusuf read his letters for him. And so everyone loved him.
But there was one man at court whose heart burned whenever he thought of Yusuf. His name was Jalal. Each time he heard Yusuf praised, it was as if a coal glowed in his chest, smoulder, smoulder. Every day he and a few friends whispered together, plotting, “How can we make that boy look small in the king’s eyes?”
At last they went to the king with a made-up story. “Your Majesty, Yusuf is betraying you. He secretly sends letters to your enemies!” The king frowned. He knew Yusuf well and had seen his honesty with his own eyes, so he paid no attention.
But Jalal’s gang did not stop. One lie today, another rumour tomorrow. Still the king’s trust did not waver. Finally he thought, “Let me hear from Yusuf himself why there is so much hostility.” He called the young man aside and asked, “My son, why are these people always after you?”
Yusuf thought for a moment and answered calmly, “Your Majesty, I try to treat everyone well. All who have honest hearts are content with me. Only the envious I cannot please, for he will be happy only when the blessings Allah has given me are taken away. I can do many things, but I cannot wipe envy out of someone else’s heart.”
The king nodded and smiled. “You are right. The wise say that the envious man hurts others far less than he hurts himself. Go on doing your work honestly, and leave the rest to Allah.” And the king told Jalal’s gang that no one was ever to bring false complaints to his court again.
And Jalal? He received the real punishment. At night he tossed and turned and could not sleep. Delicious kebab and pilaf tasted dull in his mouth. One by one his friends drifted away, because all he ever did was speak ill of others. The fire of envy could not burn a single thing of Yusuf’s; instead, it burned up Jalal’s own peace.
One day Jalal sat alone and gloomy on a veranda. Yusuf, passing by, stopped and said with a smile, “Assalamu alaikum, brother Jalal. Are you well?” Jalal looked up, startled. After everything, this young man was still greeting him kindly! His eyes dropped in shame. And for the first time he thought, “Instead of burning over other people’s happiness, I could try to become good, too.”
